The 7th Annual BYC Easter Hatch-A-Long!

So, here I am 22 hours into Day 22 and I have 2 chicks and 1 pipped (and chirping) egg left in my bator. My fertility rate is down, probably because its winter, but its only 68.75%. My hatch rate is about average for me, 77.27%, with 6 early deaths and 9 late. That gave me 51 live chicks, but so far 3 have not thrived in the brooder, and the 2 in the bator are struggling. I'll give them another 24 hours before I cull or transfer to the brooder.

I had to assist this one out of the shell, its head hasn't straightened out yet.

A spraddle-legged chick. He just won't keep his feet underneath himself.

Hopefully the last egg will hatch normally, its certainly making lots of noise.

Hope they make it. Nice hatch rate for winter post photos of the fuzzy butts when they all fluff out

I use a high lumens flashlight but still can't usually see in well. By weeks 2-3 I just go by darkness in the egg. I can usually tell clears by then.

And speaking of BCM, all 17 of my eggs that went in to lockdown hatched! The last of them overnight. My experiment with the baskets worked out pretty good. I was able to reliably band all but 2. I woke up this morning and there were 2 chicks in each basket when there were 3 eggs in one basket and one in the other lol. Those 2 got banded a totally different color until they grow. Maybe I'll be able to tell later. Only 2 of all the eggs I set were clear

I'll have to get some pictures up later. My brooder is overflowing with bouncy little poults and little black balls of fluff

Ohh too cute poults is that turkeys? What kind?

Welcome! So glad you could join!

The other chicks may not like her but Mr. Moose seems to have taken quite a shine to that sweet little face. My one and only black baby and she is soo much smaller than the others, they beat her up good last night but she was too afraid to be left. Every time I would put her down and walk away she would cry and try to push through the bars in the cat carrier. I look on BYC to see what I could do and read a few threads about putting a stuffy in the cage with her. SURE enough it worked.... I was shocked, my 5 year old gave her his stuffed moose and she is just as happy as happy could be, NOW, she cries when I take her away from the moose. This should be good when she grows up she is gonna think she is a stuffed moose.

That is so sweet. I read about that too. Its better then having to stay up all night holding a chick, right?

So i got a Little Giant incubator off the local swap shop, with egg turner, but no fan. So i took the fan out of my DIY styro bator, cause my chickens ate a hole in the side of it, and put it in the LG. Been running it for about 5 days now and the temp seems to be pretty steady so i put 6 eggs in this morning for a test run before the EHAL.

here's hoping it does a great job.
I hope all goes well!

Yeah, my chickens LOVE Styrofoam also.

I have had a 100% hatch before with a broody hen! Gave her 12 eggs, and she hatched out 12 healthy chicks!

It was a Buff Orpington hen, they have always been my best broodies so far!

My broodies are great! It's all the other chickens that cause the problems. They try to step on those eggs, dirty those eggs, and break those eggs every chance they get it seems.

Good Morning Everyone!

Good morning!

Very cute! I wonder what a stuffed moose would act like LOL.
I had a lone chick (named Chicky) that I let hang out with our dogs allot and she would eat with them so she partially imprinted on our older dog. She would actually almost "bark" like a dog, it was in-between a dog bark and a chicken squak. We trained our dogs to chase the chickens off the porch (without hurting them) and when Chicky started going outside she did whatever the dogs did. So sometimes she would be lying on the porch in the sun (she thought she got a free pass) and dad would yell "CHICKEN ON THE PORCH!!!" The dogs would run outside, past Chicky and she would jump up and follow them as they started chasing the chickens that were further away. The dogs considered her family so never learned to chase her off the porch, but she loved helping them chase the other chickens away.

She was terrified of the other chickens though unless she was chasing them.

Here's Chicky as an adult. She was my favorite chicken ever, if I walked by without noticing her she would sqwak and run after me, she also laid an egg on my lap once

That's hilarious!

She is beautiful by the way! What breed/cross is she?

I'm sorry to hear they are having trouble. A chick that is having trouble straightening is weak and needs some extra help. When I had chicks like that I would put them in a special little brooder when I was away and when I was around I would hold them in the proper position of standing, supporting their head and body, so that their muscles would get use to it. I also dipped their beaks in measuring spoons with some electrolyte water. After a couple days of being unable to walk, stand, or even straighten their heads they were completely better and now are very healthy young adults.
As they got better I introduced food, a real waterer (I started with a quail one as they stumbled a lot and I didn't wan them to drown), and eventually they were ready for a normal, large brooder. They loved the safety of a little cave to hide under when feeling nervous.

I hope this helps and they get better.
