I also have a mic stand to use when I mark aircells, its alot easier with it to hold egg in one hand and write with other, not bothering with holding flashlight.

What I use after hatching so many marans, I needed a good one!
its a 3000 lums/lumens I researched to find the brightest I could get in the most handy as well as cheap! I have bought up to 1500 lums and couldnt see into dark blue eggs, now they look like I am candling a duck egg, very quick fast and done. Love it!
Well worth the money spent and the rechargeable batteries rock!

The absolute best candler you can get is an overhead projector cheap from a yard sale. Laugh all you want but it's the honest to God's truth.

I've gotten lazy and if I candle, I use the LED app on my iPhone 6 Plus. Except for BCM's, they get the projector.

Whichever you think will work best for everyone to see is fine!  just tag me so I dont miss it! :hugs   Thank you !!

@Sally Sunshine

Thanks for your quick response. I didn't really have any cups that would work so I fashioned this. Does it look like it would work? The chick does seem more comfortable, I mean aside from being immobilized, but I haven't heard it sad peeping since I rigged it up.

Ok, "technically" it just turned twelve...but I feel just like the gif!!!

My pullet, the white one with the black spots...IS LAYING!!!
celebrate.gif
I saw her lay the egg and it's now marked!

Actually I think she's been laying for a while. It's HER that's been giving me pinkish eggs. I believe I have some in the bator. I hope

that I get white chicks. Or just something different from the brown chipmunk chicks. I'm thinking my "one"...just one black pullet is laying too!

I also see my own hatched pullets from last year checking out the nests.

I have an off the cuff question. I've seen 2 of my black Silkie roosters making nests, setting in their nests and making "hen" noises. I also see some of the Silkie pullets actually laying in the nests...

I've read that Silkies CAN help out with the brood. BUT this morning while I was waiting and watching the hens fight for the nests (nest boxes) to lay their eggs...I see I've got EE roosters doing the same thing as the Silkie roosters at the other end of the coop. They sound extremely upset, just like a hen only louder, when the other rooster wants the "nest." The next rooster gets in, sets like a hen and works at perfecting the nest. They build beautiful nests...but??? Is this normal??
