The 7th Annual BYC Easter Hatch-A-Long!

:weee                 :ya

I am soo excited that someone is doing this!

I've never hatched Emu eggs before...hatched chickens, quails, ducks, and geese, even personally incubated a few humans, but never emu!!
Can't wait to see the little guys.

This is my first hatch-a-long too. Am I supposed to do anything besides rotate my eggs and chat?

They should be fine. My big incubator got knocked down to 75° for 4 hours maybe a week ago and it doesn't look like I lost any from it.

With the comb that pink at only 3 weeks old, my guess would be cockerel.

:yuckyuck  :gig

Eggs are tougher than most give them credit for and even though the bator got down to 85F, it takes the eggs a while longer to get that cold. They will most likely be fine, but might hatch a bit late. :fl  Hang in there and just do the best you can keeping the temp up. Be patient when hatch day comes.

They should hatch on the same day of the week that you set them - i.e. if you set them on a Friday, hatch day would be Friday. However, I don't think many chicks can read the calendar, especially from inside the egg.

This! I had multiple 102 spikes on the last hatch and the temp refused to go above the low 90s for the first few days. They hatched on time with no issues.

Thank you all so much for your encouragement!! This is why I love BYC

I always have a leghorn in my flock..except now. :( I just placed her because I have so many that started laying. I miss those big white eggs every single day!
I have one white leghorn and one brown leghorn, but I think I might have to get rid of the white one. She is getting older and beginning to lay internal eggs. I don't want her to suffer. However, I love getting a mix of egg colors and so I always have some white eggs, brown eggs, tan eggs, and I love my EEs green eggs!

We just placed four Emu eggs in the incubator today! Might be late, but we'd like to still be a part of the hatch-a-long.
EMUUUUUU!!!!! Yes!

Im calling it a test run.... Hahaha
I might have to do that too.

My Hovabator just came in yesterday morning and I set 42 eggs last night at 7 for a test run before the EHAL. These eggs are from my own flock :)
Roosters include: 1 Naked Neck, 1 Barred Rock (these two were culled a week before I started collecting eggs so may not be the fathers), 1 Easter Egger, 1 Silver Sebright/Thai mix and 1 Welsummer/Barred Rock mix (the Welsummer mix is young and has only shown interest in the Faverolle). I'm expecting the EE to be the father of most since he is my dominant roo.
The eggs collected are:
6 Jungle Fowl
6 Blue Marans
6 Faverolle
4 Black Sumatra
4 Red Ranger
4 Ameracauna
3 Barnyard Mix browns
2 Barnyard Mix whites
2 Silver Grey Dorking
2 Bantam Crevecoeur
1 Welsummer
1 Olive Egger
What an incredible mix! I can't wait to see the chicks that come out of those eggs!

I have a few sets of eggs hatching before the HAL eggs need to be set. The quail started hatching yesterday!! Up to six chicks so far!!!

Adorable! Congratulations!

This is Jonas he says hi. He was named after the snow storm Jonas that knocked are power out for three days. He was one of the chicks that made it with no heat lamp for a day in a half till I got a generator. He's was 4 days old at the time now little over 3 weeks. Dad was a barred rock mom was a EE. I think he's a Roo just my opinion though. What do you experts think Roo ?

I would guess roo, but he's still a very handsome little guy all the same. And a survivor too! Its incredible what our little chicks can go through!

I have 4 pips (that I can see) in the hatching tray for my VERY FIRST hatch! I am soooo eggcited! I was sure I would miss it tomorrow but I think that my count is off on days. I wasn't counting the day I set them as a day.. Does that make sense? Or are they early?
Congrats!

Good Friday all!

Had turned a light on in the coop last week, the last 2 days I'm getting eggs again. Have to get the girls going to give me some nice eggs to put in for the easter hatchalong. :)

Got my quail egg inserts for my cabinet-bator, so should be good for the couple boxes coming (hopefully) this weekend. I admit it, I spent hours last night not sleeping and reading up on all the possibilities of quail and quail egg cooking.

Got the chicken socks in today, too, so I've got the two shakers and two pairs of socks for prizes now in hand. :) Can't wait for the contests.

Also was organizing my hatching area, getting it all cleaned up, disinfected, and ready to roll for 2016 hatching. The incubators have kind of piled up. I really need to move on the ones I haven't used in the last couple years. Got two hovabators, one home made 2 tier wooden cabinet one that I don't use, along with turning racks, thermostats wired in, fans. Maybe donate a hovabator for a contest, can you do that with used equipment? I suppose I can put them on craigslist. Would like to free up the space and I already get myself into enough chicken math trouble with the one incubator I DO use. LOL

Awwww... Is it sad that I'm sitting home ALL week next week in the hopes of catching a hatch on video? My daughter has worked so hard on her little class video these past 2 weeks. She's only 8 and already teaching a class of 3rd graders on the process of incubating chicken eggs. We even recorded the collection process of the final eggs just so she could say she did it. We marked those 3 and all 3 are showing great signs of growing... Well just turned day 15 according to the incubator counter. Lockdown Monday hatching on Thursday if all goes as planed. I hope she gets to see them zip.

I hope your Daughter is able to witness the pip, zip and hatch process of her 3 eggs. Much success for her and her project. I'm sure she will look back on this experience with fond memories of how Mom stuck with her, but allowed her to do by herself. Blessings to you both!

Oh, those are so pretty. :) I am jealous. I can't tell you how many times I've had to slap my own fingers to avoid getting some to incubate. I am NOT set up for emu, (I love those dinosours!) I am NOT set up for emu, (I could get a pen ready for them before they need one....) I AM NOT set up for EMU!

Good luck with your hatch, I'll live vicariously through you.
