Quote: Locked up (too many flying predators during the day), but they do have a dust bathing area. I have to redo it every time it rains, but they're worth it.

@Sally Sunshine Thank you for the links! I'll get right on reading them.

Yes, it is a digestion problem that lets yeast grow in the digestive track. You need to get pro biotics in them--get them some grit too.

Guess what! Treatment is monistat.

It looks like it is early because the gray mess is not there yet so good catch!

@ronott1
After reading Sally's article on it, I think you may be right and she may not be the only one.

So, I have another question: Could this possibly be caused by overly wet/muddy conditions? The run is all dry now, but it gets down right nasty in there when it rains.

Mine dont have issues (yet) but my run also useed to get gross in the rain and I put pine shavings down. Still sometimes gets gross but I did a thick layer. course they kick most out but does help. Although I'm building a new, much bigger, run and coop soon and in the coop I'll keep using pine shavings but the new run will be a sort of deep litter/forest floor type thing. 3 inches of wood chips then 3 inches of leaves/forest floor litter stuff and also grass clippings and anything elsse is gonna get thrown in. Should be healthier plus not muddy and easier for me

But the real reason I'm commenting is the part where it says they need probiotics. I know it's a treatment in this case but I just ordered some probiotics yesterday for the dog, along with 4 other things, and was thinking I may use it on the cat too after reading some of the reviews since she has goopy eyes all the time. So ANYWAY. Was wondering if I could perhaps give some to the chickens? One review said all their animals are on it but of course I don't know what kind of animals they have. Or maybe something as simple as yogurt may help???? The stuff i ordered is geneflora. But im nervous now cause one review says they used to feed this then couldn't find it so used another kind but the dogs gained weight so they found this again but right before they bought it had read a good article that said how to tell really good probiotics. Apparently it said to take half a cup of milk and if it turns to yogurt consistency it is a really good probiotic. Well apparently this one they put 2 heaping scoops and after 24 hours barely curdled and they put 1/4 teaspoon of the other stuff and within minutes was thick yogurt consistency. They didn't say the other brand though :( but i read it AFTER i ordered it. But every other one has rave reviews and improvements in the pets so i dont know ....

But anyway, this is it.

Ignore the tray on the right, it was for a different project

Are they free range or locked up? If they are locked up, do they have an area they can dust bathe? I had mites only once. And that was when I don't have a dust bathing area. I put a plastic tub in with sand and dirt mix for them.
Tub is cut like in the pic. I also used a spare one inch pvc pipe for the bottom edge of the cut part, slit one side of pic and put over the edge so the chickens could stand on it. I have 3 of them use it at once sometimes, they don't lay eggs in it because they like their nesting boxes with straw instead of dirt and sand

I love this idea!

So I MIGHT have just snuck a tiny peek at a handful of eggs via candling while they were still in their turner! I had to crack the lid anyway to add a tiny bit of water to the bator and couldn't help it even though tonight is only night 6...

I did see some good things though!! Didn't want to take anyone out and candle "for real" - I haven't decided if I should do that tomorrow night (on day 7) or wait until day 10. So excited!!!

Fyi you can make your own probiotics cheap by feeding/making yogurt (SUPER EASY) for your chickens or kombucha (less easy). My chickens go insane when I chop up the scoby for them and they love it when I mix yogurt into their feed

Edit: fermented feed is also probiotic!

I wonder if Save a chick will work? I still have a few packs hanging around.

It's day 7 on my shipped eggs and the eggs underneath my mama hen. I cannot see through my shipped eggs because they are dark olive colored eggs and the shells are very thick. But the eggs under my mama hen look great! Can't wait to see if there's any more development on day 14.

My candling results so far!

My Ayam Cemani eggs don't count, but are on day 11 now. 6/11 are alive. They were shipped really roughly from Idaho to California.

My Mille Fleur eggs are in for HAL, day 9, I just candled them and only two were clears! 10/12 are alive! Shipped all the way from Georgia to California! That's a long way!

My 4 eggs from a friend that I set for HAL. On day 5, candled today and 3/4 are alive.

Chicks Galore soon!
