Im doing a test hatch before the HAL right now . And so far the easter eggers that have started to pip are all pipping on the small end of the egg. Could this be a genetic disorder. So far its just 2 out of 14 eggs.

I've had wrong way pippers hatch on their own just fine. Don't hatch them in cartons though.

Well, today I learned the importance of having more than one thermometer in your incubator. My one thermometer had been reading around 97-98 for the last week, so I slowly increased the temp setting on the incubator to try and bring it up. Today when I woke up the thermometer was dead! When I put a new battery in, the temp read 106

Apparently as the battery was dying it wasn't reading correctly. Of the 6 duck eggs I candled only 2 showed signs of life

From now on I will have more than one thermometer in there!

P.S. This is the first time I have had any issues like this. I never had an issue so I didn't see a need to add another thermometer..... Lesson definitely learned!

Thanks guys. I have 12 duck eggs and 30 chicken in there. I've read most people get 25% hatch rate or lower if something like this happens. A real bummer compared to the 80% I had last hatch!

I kept adjusting the thermometer with my first hatch...just a few degrees up and down. My results were lousy. I learned to turn the bator on for a whole week before putting in the eggs. Then it's "set it and forget it". I do keep a 2nd thermometer inside just in case, though.

It was calibrated correctly. I made sure of that! Plus I had a hatch finish about a week before I set these eggs

I just didn't realize the battery was low and that when the battery is low it doesn't read temp correctly. It read humidity just fine.... Weird. But the one battery has lasted me a year or more of hatching, so I'm not too upset. Just wished I realized it sooner!

I also learned today you can stack extra eggs on top of the eggs in the turner of a hovabator, taking the capacity to 72! Guess I will be setting an extra 30 eggs this go round!
