The 8th Annual BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!!!!

Thanks. I really don't want to have to do it but unless I can find homes for them I have no choice. I have very limited space in the garden.

I have to cull at times ...and I am afraid that I have one that I've been working on now for days. My last hatch of cochins. Makes me sad every time, but if they aren't coming around, and can't walk right..well....I believe it's best. Good luck on what ever you need to do!

My loud cheeper didn't make it. I know someone posted and said they associated that sound with being cold, but they chicks are under a "brooder hen" and it's toasty warm underneath. The other three are quiet, eating, drinking, tussling. I knew the SLRW was not good, but I just didn't see why. No pasty butt, no panting, no visual issues. I felt like she was a bit lethargic last night and gave her some Nutri Drench before bed. She was alive this morning, but must have passed away in the afternoon while I was at work.

I know that's the way it is, but this is the first time I lost a chick that wasn't directly due to shipping. Just makes me wonder if I could have done something differently.

That's sad :/

I wonder if Meyer does because I know they have both the Meyer Meal Maker where you get a free chick for eggs or meat (they try to match it to your order if you add it) and the leann Adopt Me thing where you adopt leftover unwanted birds, as well as a lot of meat bird assortments both meat breeds and heritage breeds, so idk. Sure maybe they do still have extras though :(

This is all im going to post on this.

The theoretical probability for male to female chicks is 1:1. And lets say a hatchery hatches a total of 2 million chicks(that's probably not a realistic number

) but that means theorerically 1 million chicks are males and IMHO there is no way a hatchery could sell that many males for any reason.

That's very true but Meyer hatchery is also a smaller hatchery and my point wasn't that they are able to sell all the males but more that they probably sell/rehome more males than other hatcheries with all the programs they have to give them out

Rayven, I have some photos of the silkies for you to see...ahem..help me with....can you tell by now boys from girls...I tried to down load some, but it didn't allow one..starting over....
