The 8th Annual BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!!!!

They are supposed to be very productive too

Do you eat your extra cockerels?
Yes. Just started with them last spring, started with 15, culled to five for little to no bowtie, so we ate quite a few. Pullets were rather small but the cockerels were very meaty. Best part was the lack of feathers, and except for the ones with large bowties, there was no hair. To look at them is pretty deceiving, they are actually much more naked, the feathers grow in strips and cover the rest that is bald.
Of course they excel in hot climates, I was concerned they would not do well here even though I heard they are cold hardy, Ha! they laughed at me all bundled up this winter, they did great. The girls have laid about every single day since they started this winter, very few days I didn't get a full count.

When should I put my broody and her babies back in the main flock?
my broodies have a safe place in the main house so they are not really away from the flock, a mom will fight to protect her chicks. I would put them with the flock during the day and keep an eye on them just to make sure everyone is safe and if no problems arise put her back in.
