The 9th Annual BYC Easter Hatchalong!

Hey all just an update on my hatch. Which I'm very unhappy with.

Bad news only 2 maybe 3 swimmers.

Out of I think it was 35 eggs set 18 had damage tonight at candling. Hairline cracks... Perhaps they were partially frozen when I brought them in. Unusually I didn't candle the eggs before setting them this time around because I had only collected the previous two days.

18 cracked eggs
2 swimmers and 1 ?
And it looks like 14 clears. Ouch bad odds but I knew most probably wouldn't be fertile. Our little male in that group is prejudiced against the A& Ms. Idk why. He also hadn't been in with them long after being too rough on the Pharoah girls in the group. He had been separated for a break for them.

Unfortunately over the weekend we lost one of our two Pharoah females to what I believe was a blockage in her digestive tract. She went down hill very quickly and we decided culling was the most humane when we couldn't get her to turn around. Always a hard decision to make.

I don't know for sure but I'm hoping that those eggs may contain her babies.

This is our worst numbers ever except for some shipped eggs a couple years ago(when cracked open most of those weren't even fertile). I suspect the two quail eggs developing were the only two fertile eggs.

Thanks everyone! I homeschool our kids so we are here all day staring at the incubator. I swear its as bad as watching for water to boil!!! My oldest has had a hard time with the concept of calendar days but has really gotten a hang of it since we started counting down the days with our 21 day poster.
A real world use for a calendar! I wonder if you can do the same thing with their birthday?

I am sorry about the bad eggs and the loss of your Girl!

I hope you can hatch out a replacement

Thanks

This is just the first hatch of the year and I plan to add some more birds into our quail breeding program for genetic diversity. That girl that we lost was from a different line so it's a bummer but the breeder still has the line.

We I'll definitely be hatching many more birds this year. Including quail
Buckeyes Dominiques English Orpingtons Cream Legbars and EE.

So not a great start to the year but things can almost only go up from here lol.

I just hope they both hatch. We usually have 100% fertility in our quail and chicken eggs but I knew it was a high probability of low fertility.

We also had to pull the male quail back out because the dominant female in the group kicked his butt. He's all healed up now. I really hate how they tend to go for the eyes when fighting.

When we get ready to try again that dominant A&M will be pulled for a few days before reintroduction.

Try liquid bandage (I got New Skin) on the cracked eggs. I actually had some hatch out last year.

I use clear nail polish and have had great success. A batch of shipped eggs came with 5 cracked ones. A little clear nail polish really did great! 2 from that batch competely developed and one hatched (I named her Crackle). I have another cracked egg with strong development from the next shipment. We'll see this weekend if it hatches!

For me, harder than the 18 day wait for lockdown.
