The 9th Annual BYC Easter Hatchalong!

I think at least keeping your eggs upright in a carton in storage helps keep the yolk in the center, might be settled but at least center. I found this out when I boiled a bunch of eggs for pickling. Had them stored in big coffee containers laid flat. Almost every one I peeled the yolk was resting on the side of the shell... no good for pickling. Doesn't take long either, they were not old eggs.

When I rotate these eggs some of them seem to not have a fast reaction in the movement of the yolk. No idea if this is normal once they are incubating. I hope they are ok.

Here are my 2 Nn's for now. Another hatched from my Nn girl, but isn't a Nn. One of these is the color of the mom one is going to be white.

tell me how they caqn be so cute little but so ugly grown up :lau
It's so funny. I used to swear that I would NEVER own one. Now, I love them, with a bow tie better. :p I've had people see them and ask, aww .. poor thing, what happened to its feathers on the neck? Or, they think they look like a turkey.

I love it. "Dude what's wrong with your chickens "
What do you mean? Lol

First bunch I had the chicks in the garage, BIL stopped by, I told him they were baby ostrich. He went on about how big they get. I admitted they were just chickens, he laughed. Before he left he asked how I was going to fence them in?.... Told him again they were chickens and explained what they were, just laughed like I was filling him full of bull.

Not usually. The tilting helps keep the egg yolk in the correct spot. Wonky air cells happen because the eggs were handled roughly.
Like putting the egg in your pocket, running back to the house & getting a dab of honey for their water. By the time my egg made it back to the incubator...... wouldn't doubt if it gets a wonky air cell, too!

Ok, so of course the young hen that just started to lay gave me a soft shell yesterday, very soft, went to pick it up and poked my finger through the top. This is the Cinnamon Queen, so with this rooster would get me some excellent layers. Today, here is what she laid. Haven't seen one of these in ages. Hope she gets going on nice sized eggs before she isn't fertile any longer. I have one in the bator for the hatch along that has started, can see the beanie baby. Anyway, I'm sure many of you have seen one of these before from a new layer. She needs to get this right! Soon. Best have a talk with her. ;) View attachment 1296127 View attachment 1296131 View attachment 1296134 View attachment 1296136Fertile.
She laid another one! Oh yes she did! I only have 4 layers, putting them into a crate waitng for set day now. So, I know what's been laid on a day. No one else out there ready to lay, not even close. This egg was small too, but at least was a normal looking one. :d Here is what I have so far, one more is pipping, from the Rock, then the others are staggered for the next couple of days. Strong little things!
