The adventures of Barbara (BR)

Little Barbara is not satisfied with the nine nests in her coop. She thinks the storage area of the old ladies coop is the best place to lay her perfect eggs. Last time, found her egg on top of the bale of straw. Today, this is her chosen spot. Bad Barbara!

I do believe Little Barbara has posed for the same picture as Big Barbara. Little Barbara seems to be quite creative as well—no used shavings for her eggs! Go Little Barbara, Go!

Marion, the Wheaten Ameraucana, has been creative with her egg laying, also. She waits until the Evil Cochin Twins are let out to free range, then she ducks into their little igloo coop and lays her blue egg. If the Evil Cochin Twins have not been let out, she walks back and forth in front of the pen, complaining bitterly. This is the same pen where Barbara and Marion learned to tightrope walk.

Mrs. Chickendad: I promise to try and get you photos of Tyson and Hannah. They are doing so well. Tyson has relaxed and is more like him old self. He has not been aggressive, of course this could be because I knocked the snot out of him a couple of times....but also, the girls are beginning to be receptive to him and he is kept busy chasing 12 girls....We lost 1 of the BR. I had quite a scare that something contagious might be going through my flock. Ended up being a false alarm. The one hen got stressed - I think she ate a yellow jacket (had a nest in the hen house that took forever to find and kill) and I think she got stung in the mouth or somewhere near. She had one eye closed. I kept her with the flock for 3 days, she seemed to be trying to eat and drink, but she then got stressed and had something respiratory pop up....she was quarantined and no matter what I did (including took to vet with shot) did not help her. She was too far gone. I felt so bad. Watching everyone closely and they are all doing well.

Regarding the now 11 BR girls.....BRs are such a hoot. We put up foam insulation in the hen house to winterize.....before I could get the plastic over it....they were eating it....I had to lock them out of the house because they would not leave it alone. Brats. I have 4-6 hens laying every day now, but they are still trying to figure out the perfect laying spot. LOL.

Go Barbara and Little Barbara!!! Special eggs laid by very special BRs need exceptionally wonderful places to be deposited!! There should be a thread with unusual egg locations pictured.

So sorry you lost one of your BRs, 4 cats. It sounds like you did everything possible to care for her. Eating the foam insulation sounds so BR!! Speckles used to LOVE to pick the little white pieces out of potting soil. Of course, getting TO the potting soil involved scratching out whatever plant happened to have been inconveniently located IN the potting soil!

Such fun to hear about the Barbaras and other BRs, as well as to see photos. Keep it up!!

Rearranging the plants sounds so BR...they are a hoot. Tonight, the DH tried twice to go out the back door to shut the chicken run up after they had gone in to roost, the second they heard our back door open, they all bolted out the run to see what goodies we may have for them.

Okay, as promised, some photos of the family (feathered family):

King of the roost......Tyson:

Second in command....Hannah:

Hannah takes no guff off of the BR girls. She holds her own against them.

Tyson does have a few BR girls that are his favorites, not sure if this is one or not, but I was on the ground trying to get a shot of Hannah and this BR girl got in the way of the shot....I think she was trying to upstage Hannah, personally:

I edited this as I wanted a larger photo of Tyson.....hope it comes out that way.

My, Tyson and Hannah are quite the handsome pair! Hannah looks very "cochiny"; as I recall she is half BLRW, half Leroy, right? And Tyson is most gorgeous with his stripes and fuzzy legs. He is same shape/body type as Leroy, seems to be quite self-assured, too. Thanks for posting!
