The adventures of Barbara (BR)

The Queen and Her Subjects

Barbara shivered—someone had turned the heat off! She tried to cuddle up under Buffy’s wing, but Buffy pecked her sharply on the head. The pinfeathers on Barabara’s head poked Buffy’s armpit. Barbara’s molt was over and she was growing new feathers on her head. They stuck up like points on a crown, but Barbara thought that a crown was entirely appropriate, given her status as Queen.

Poor Little Frizzie was having trouble with the cold weather, too. In addition to being frizzled, she had been molting and her little wings just had quills sticking out. She lost all of her tailfeathers except for a couple small ones that stuck up like little waterspouts, so her tail was naked. The top of her head was bare, too. Leroy had been trying to keep her warm, but he did not have many feathers to spare. Mrs. Chickendad snapped a picture of Poor Little Frizzie:

The Chickendads had been busy putting together new pens and rearranging old ones. The Silly Ameraucanas, continuing the tradition of the Silly Ameraucana Sisters, ran up and down in their new pen squawking and flapping hysterically, as is their nature. After about a week, the Chickendads opened the pen so the Silly Ameraucanas could free range. They enjoyed sun bathing and dirt baths, garden tomatoes and flowers, but when it came time to go to bed, they got lost. The Silly Ameraucanas could not find their butts with both hands, so to speak.

Some of them finally found their way back to the pen and roosted outside on the pole holding up the waterer, pooping with great accuracy into the water. The two oldest Silver Girls went back to their old pen, which was now filled with hysterical little Mille Fleur Cochin babies. The Mille Fleur Babies were terrified to find Big Girls With Beards eating their food and acting pushy. The Babies all huddled in the corners and screamed in fear. The Chickendads rescued the Babies and took the Big Girls With Beards back where they belonged.

The next night, only one of the Big Girls With Beards went in the wrong pen, but the rest of the Silly Ameraucanas were trying to roost on the water pole again. The Chickendads went out and herded them into the coop and they have finally gotten the Big Picture.

I found this thread early this afternoon and just finished reading all 121 pages. I should say yesterday afternoon as it is well past midnight now and long since time to go to bed. But I couldn't quit until I got to the end. I have laughed thru this entire thread and enjoyed it so much. Am looking forward to the further adventures of Barbara.

Thanks again, Mrs Chickendad, for your GREAT stories!!!!!

My 2 babies (cream legbar and buff sussex) moved in with the grown ups yesterday. I thought they would be OK as they have been next to the grown ups for more than a month now...No such luck! The babies aren't allowed to go to bed!!!

Hope they will be more settled tonight!

The Drama Continues . . .

Now that the Sillly Ameraucanas have learned to go inside the coop at night, the Chickendads upset their applecart again. The Chickendads scored a bunch of kennel fencing at a garage sale recently, and decided that the Silly Ameraucanas would be happier, and perhaps less hysterical, with a bigger pen. So after lots of tugging and pulling, bolting together, leveling, and stringing netting over the top to keep them from unauthorized trips outside, the SAs were moved into their new digs. Hysteria prevailed at first, especially when they realized that the Chickendads were actually going to touch them (“HELP—MURDER!” they shrieked), but a scoop of scratch got them distracted enough to explore their new accommodations, and forget about the invasion of their “personal space”. That evening they went into their new indoor pen with no problem, lining up on the roost like an angelic choir.

Barbara and the Big Chickie Girls also have a nice big new pen off the main coop. Barbara was instrumental in putting the pen together. She tried out the doorway several times, walking back and forth to make sure there was enough butt room. She checked Mrs. Chickendad’s pockets for treats and sat on her knee to get a closeup view of the assembly process. She was very helpful. The new pen must meet the Queen’s approval, after all.

Barbara was still suspicious of Bob. He looked very messy and tattered, like he had lost an argument. All his beautiful tail feathers had broken off or come out, except for one. Bob’s broken crepe paper tailfeather fluttered behind him as he ran all over trying to keep the Big Chickie Girls together. Barbara spent extra time preening in the warm sun, making sure her bars lined up just so. She still had a big red bald spot on her back, but her head pinfeathers were starting to lay down neatly. Well, a girl still had to look good even if her man had let himself go.
