There are lovely yellow daffodils blooming at the Chickendads house. Barbara has not bothered with them, as her favorite flavor is pink and she is waiting for the pink flowers to bloom into a tasty snack. Leroy has been secretly dating Barbara when Walter isnt looking, but she has a new suitor also. He is a little buff columbian rooster, and he has fallen in love with ALL the Big Chickie Girls. He has dated a couple of the girls, but Walter has intervened and knocked him off a few times.
Barbara has been able to stop wearing her blue dress as feathers now cover most of her back, but she is still bald and her tail is a mess. She has been visiting the honeymoon hotel, strutting up and down the aisle and flaunting herself in front of all the Wyandotte and Cochin couples. Of course, someone does need to keep the spilled food cleaned up, and Barbara has appointed herself Head of Housekeeping.
The Chickendads took Chickenboy to the Poultry Show at Alma, Michigan last Saturday. They also took some chickens to show for the first time. Everyone was kept busy running back and forth keeping birds watered and fed. Most of the birds did quite well, especially Bobby the Beautiful (son of Bob the Beautiful), who won variety, breed, and Best Any Other Standard Breed. He was quite impressed with himself, and danced and sang for a little bantam hen in the next cage. She was not so impressed, so the more she ignored him, the more he crowed and dragged his wings. He was in love!
On Monday, Mrs. Chickendad went to visit her friend Audrey, who raises the cutest bunnies ever! There was lots of chicken and rabbit talk, (although Mrs. Chickendad knows nothing about rabbits), and a wonderful side trip to the local greenhouse, where Mrs. Chickendad perused the collection of hostas in anticipation of replacing the ones Barbara and Buffy ate last year. Mrs. Chickendad thinks that it is going to be fairly expensive if the Barbara/Buffy duo to continues to eat hosta.
Mrschickendad Please let Leroy know that in about 20 days he will be a grandpa. I have a broody who is sitting on 5 eggs from the big girls. I am not sure who's eggs she has but will figure it out once they hatch. I also have a few pictures to post of Leon with my grand daughter. Loved the story and hope everyone is doing well.
I was just thinking today that I was missing hearing about Barbara and the gang. We missed you! I wanted to introduce the newest member. Rooster Cogburn a 7 week old Barred Rock.
He has been feasting his eyes on his future ladies, the fuzzy bottom sisters. They are in agreement that Cogburn is way to big for his little britches. He is in the baby pen but that doesn't stop him from strutting his stuff to the girls next door.
Bosco is NOT impressed! He does have to let Cogburn know who is the boss from time to time.
That is the CUTEST bunny ever! How does one get ahold of these famous Leroy offspring?
I have just discovered this thread and have been catching up over the last few days. Great stories. I'm on page 102, so still need to do more reading....I'm a Barbara Fan!
I had best not let Barbara hear about Rooster Cogburn! She does not yet know that Roosters come in stripes, too.
Welcome to Barbara's new fans! It is always so nice to be "discovered". I enjoy reading the feedback from everyone. Barbara had another adventure today, so there should be another chapter as soon as I can get to it. Lots of babies to care for!
After reading all the adventures of Barbara, I had to get a Barred Rock. I finally got one and put her with my broody. Today, I found saw her climb up on top of Buffy and sit there quite happily - she was still there when DH got home.
