The adventures of Barbara (BR)

That Wendy is a pushy broad, isn't she? there were plenty of other perfectly nice clean nest boxes for her to lay her egg in! I'll bet if she were a human, she'd cut in line at Wal-Mart, or park in the fire lanes.

Yes, indeed, those are curtains in the nestboxes. We bought the unit used and it had little pieces of oilcloth to keep it darker. Our coops have lots of windows, so we kept it that way. I restrained myself from adding a lace fringe.

I think Wendy was trying to put Barbara in her place after Barbara squashed her in the nest. (See avatar) Wendy and her sisters are actually very laid back with humans, but tend to throw their considerable weight around with the Junior Big Girls.

Thanks everyone for your nice comments! I'm glad Barbara can bring a smile to your day—she certainly does to mine!

Little Girl Troubles

Barbara laid low after Wendy assaulted her dignity. She stayed with Leroy and Buffy and left Wendy alone. Wendy was such a Cranky Pants!

The Food Lady bought grapes and shared with the chickens—they were so happy! It had been a long time since grapes had been on sale. The girls gobbled and squawked over the grapes and bit the Food Lady’s fingers in their excitement.

On the weekend, the Food Man and John Deere had moved the Banty Coop over near the Big Girls’ Coop. On Monday, he let everyone out to free range. The Banties were fluttering around the yard all day, digging in the tall grass and bathing under the quince bush, although it was pretty chilly for bathing. While the Food Lady was getting dinner ready, she looked out the window and noticed that the banties were still out in the yard.

They were lost! Their coop was moved to a new place, and they kept walking around and around the place it had been. Their Head Rooster, Hot Shot decided to lead them into the pole barn, but it was very cold in there. Where was their nice warm coop?

The Food People got on their jackets and went to round up the Little Girls and Boys and lead them back to the new coop location. Poor little Hot Shot was frantic trying to protect his girls and keep them together. He is a good rooster, just like his daddy, Hot Stuff. One Little Girl would run one way and one would run in the opposite direction. The Food People are not exactly agile any more, so there was a lot of huffing and puffing trying to herd chickens in the almost dark. Everytime they got close to grabbing one, the automatic yard light would come on and alert the banties. It was like herding cats.

Eventually, it got dark enough for the Little Girls to get captured, and the Food People transported armloads of Little Chickens back to their coop. Hot Shot, however, would not be caught, and it didn’t help that he was dark colored and hard to see. He eventually responded to the magnetic draw of food, and finally got to the steps and recognized where he should go. He climbed up on the roost surrounded by all his Little Girls and crowed his victory. Everyone was safe and he was still Head Rooster!

They were really just trying to see if Mr and Mrs Chickendad were awake and watching!

Hot Stuff and Leroy take care of the laying flock. Walter will soon take his place with the Wyandotte Women, and the Ameraucana brothers will soon have their wives with them. Silver has the 3 Silly Ameraucana sisters, but Bob (wheaten) only has Marian (Miss Uppity Blue Egg). I am looking for a couple more wheaten pullets, should anyone know of some good ones!

Sadly, tho, my new jail bird, the black mottled cochin roo is sick, Marek's I think. He is in the hospital (house) eating his way thru pounds of grapes and scrambled eggs. Trying to pull him thru.

Sorry, didn't mean to hijack my own thread!

Hows the little cochin roo doing?? rooting for him...

i think my RIR, Donna has been reading over my shoulder and taking notes- she seems to have a touch of barbara in her!!

Thank you again for sharing your birds. I missed this installment because I had an extremely LOOONG exhausting day at work Tuesday/Wednesday, but your stories are so wonderful.
How long will it be before your little cochin roo is out of the woods?

Are you able to work on your quilting projects at all?

I have 2 barred rock hens and they both have big attitudes its amazing, Zelda (queen chicken) pecks at the others feet when she wants them off the perch, Zoe is her 2nd in command sometimes she acts like a mommy chicken others she is just mean to the little ones it is amazing how each chicken has their own personalities I am really amazed by my chickens they so much fun, I have to watch them since they have learned to sneak out the gate if you are not watching they are to smart for their own good sometimes. keep the stories of Barbara coming love them they always make me smile.
