Moulting
Barbara wasnt getting that strange crampy egg feeling any more. It was mostly so cold and dark outside all she wanted to do was sleep. She tried to snuggle with Leroy but he didnt want to. Barbara was all prickly! He snuggled up to the Orpingtons and watched Barbara from a distance. She had a big pile of feathers all around her on the floor of the coop. It was a wonder that Barbara still had any feathers left, there were so many. They were beautiful feathers, but they werent attached to anything.
The next day it was warm and sunny outside. The Food Man let the Chickie Girls out to free range. The Wyandottes had a turn yesterday, so the cooped up Chickie Girls needed a change of scenery. Barbara and Leroy raced all over looking for goodies. The Big Girls went up on the deck and trick or treated at the back door. The Food Lady got the magic bag and gave them grapes. They remembered their manners and came up to her one by one to receive their grapes. A couple of them took cuts in line and got extra grapes. That is what happens when you look a lot like your sister.
The Boys came up too, but they had to act all manly and call the Girls over to see the grapes they had found. One of the Boys couldnt find a grape (the Girls were eating VERY fast), so he called them over to see the fabulous twig he had found. The Girls were not impressed.
Barbara finally realized that treats were on hand, so she flew/ran up the steps to the door. Barbara was apparently unaware that she was looking a bit ratty. She felt cold and drafty in spite of the warm sun. After receiving her treat, Barbara strutted off in her tattered feathers, looking like she had forgotten to get completely dressed that morning. She didnt know it, but she would have beautiful new striped feathers for spring!
