The adventures of Barbara (BR)

Mystery Solved

The Food People studied and studied over how that egg got into the Baby Chicken pen. The Easter Bunny isn't due for 2 weeks, so that wasn't it. They finally realized that the only way it could have gotten there was out of the Food Man’s pocket. He puts eggs in his pocket when he finds them, and sometimes he puts them down and forgets to put them away. The Food Lady has found eggs of questionable age in jacket pockets, on the work bench and on the glove shelf by the back door. So the Baby Girls are not growing up as fast as that!

The Baby Boys, on the other hand are learning to crow. The little Love Child now says, “How-de-doo” and the other Love Child answers, “Help!”. So it is a constant chorus of “How-de-doo?”, “Help!”, “How-de-doo?”, “Help!”

Over in the Big Girls coop, Barbara is a celebrity. A picture of Barbara’s smile won second place at the BYC “Edited Large Fowl Contest” thread. Of course, Barbara already knew she was a celebrity, she was just waiting for everyone else to figure it out.

Barbara and Leroy enjoyed a few days of free ranging this week due to the warm weather. The Food Lady went out with a bag of grape treats yesterday and Barbara was right in the front row. When the Food Lady bent down to talk to her, Barbara jumped up and “kissed” her on the nose! Barbara kisses very hard, but the Food Lady gave her treats anyway. Don’t mess with a diva!

How are you feeling, MrsChickendad? Glad to see you up and about. We lost our precious roo, Marvin, a few weeks ago. When I speak of him, I often call him Leroy. Talk about not respecting the dead! Or ya' think that might be a compliment? Always good to hear from you. Caroline

Hope you're doing well, Mrs.Chickendad! Tell Barbara that her fame has won her another namesake--we have an almost six-week-old Barred Rock Barbara now, too. Hey, lot of folks name their kids after celebrities, right?

Caroline, so sorry to hear about Marvin. It's sad to lose a bird, especially since they have such personalities. You really should get another "Leroy". Keep the girls on their toes, so to speak. I have several Love Children available . . . .free . . . . .

Cynthia, Barbara will be flattered about her namesake. Flattered. Not surprised. She IS a diva, you know, so it is expected that the more astute of her fans will recognize that and name their chicken children accordingly. Thanks, I always appreciate your comments! Can you post a picture of Barbara Jr.?

To all who have inquired, I did get the dratted cast off 10 days ago, but have not noticed much improvement in the pain level. I have to see the surgeon on Tuesday regarding my trick knee, which slips off track 3-4 times a day, just a bit inconvenient not to mention painful. So the right leg isn't worth squat at this point. I have rheumatoid arthritis also, so its hard to tell if the gimpy foot is RA or post surgical, or just because it's spring and the weather/pressure changes a lot. Sorry, enuf whining.

We are supposed to have good weather again, so hopefully Barbara will have more outdoor adventures soon. Chickendad spent a half hour with HIS Speckled Sussex the other night after one escaped. Every time he put it back in the coop, another would escape. His hair (both of them) was standing directly on end by the time he got in the house.

Have a great day, everyone!

Chicken TV

It was a good day to get a lot of little things done. The Wyandottes went out to play and Barbara and the Chickie Girls stayed in the outdoor pen. Leroy is in detention for picking a fight with Hot Stuff, so those boys will alternate detention until they can play nice.

The Food Man fixed the ramp on the Sussex pen because they are not happy with it so steep. They can’t “find their butts with both hands” so cannot figure out how to get in and out of the coop. Hopefully they will manage it out soon because pushing them out with a broom is getting old.

Next, he built a couple temporary pens in the breezeway to house the Bigger Babies and the Babies Who Were Hatched at School. Those Babies will be coming home Saturday.

Then the Food Man cut a window in the brooder so the Newest Babies can see out and learn about the big world outside the dining room. They were very excited to see all that goes on out there, and peeped noisily at anyone who came by to speak to them. They no longer panic when they hear a noise, so the Food People think that the window will help them be less stressed out and learn to be good, calm chickies. The thing is, now the brooder looks just like Chicken TV!
