The adventures of Barbara (BR)

BAH HUMBUG!

Barbara has been stomping up and down in the coop muttering under her chicken breath. “OUT! I WANT OUT!” she thought bitterly. “WHERE IS LEROY? I’M BORED! I AM COLD.” Barbara was quickly spinning out of control. She tried to snuggle up to Roastmary, but as soon as she did, Roastmary dropped a pile of feathers on the floor. Roastmary has very bad timing, picking Christmas week to molt. Barbara got down and continued to stomp around and complain. The only other birds in the big coop who had lots of feathers were the big Wyandotte Boys. They were BEAUTIFUL! Unfortunately, they were also huge, and Barbara did not want to trade warmth for romance with those Big Boys. She was not that sort of girl. She tucked her wings up over her back to keep her bald spot warm.

Thursday, the Chickendads made a stop at TSC and picked up Christmas presents for all the chickies. They were going to wait until the actual day, but seeing the state that Barbara, and frankly, most of the other Big Girls were in, they decided that Christmas would come early this year.

The Chickendads proceeded to lug the presents out to the coops so everyone could share. They put the present down in the middle of the floor and all the Wyandottes hid in the corners from the strange gift. Barbara and the Chickie Girls were bored enough to be curious, so they inspected the wierd block in the middle of the floor. Monica circled it several times. Buffy reached out and tasted one of it’s corners. Barbara jumped up on top to see if it would be good to roost on. It was hard to get her toes around, so she pooped on it instead. The Chickendads were not offended at Barbara's seeming rejection of their gift, her attitude is one of her more endearing qualities.

Meanwhile, the other Chickie Girls (and Bob the Still Bald) summoned up enough courage to taste the flock block’s pointy edges. YAY—IT WAS TREATS! The Chickies all crowded around and had a Christmas Party.

Over in the Ameraucana Coop, the flock block was viewed with grave suspicion. The birds in that group spent so much time looking for axe murderers under the bed that they had no time to be bored, so the gift was greeted with the utmost reserve. The three keets, who are inherently hysterical anyway, ran around the pen shrieking, certain they were about to be poisoned.

Mrs. Chickendad went to check on Barbara and the Big Girls before lockup. Barbara had enjoyed the treat very much. She was sitting next to the nearly naked Roastmary, trying to keep her balance and blinking blearily. Roastmary was trying to preen, but she was going to have to pick her feathers off the floor to do it. She continued to molt like a vacuum cleaner commercial.

Mrs. Chickendad swears she saw a burp puff out Barbara’s cheeks before Barbara tucked her head under her wing to sleep it off.

Mrs Chickendad, my chickie girls need advice from Barbara and her friends: What to do when you're cooped on cold days? Our EE "Roaster" and her best friend "Mr. Peeps" are dutifully putting up with Miss Chloe's 9 pullet/roo babies, which is something to do, but still are complaining of boredom. Also, complaining there's no way to dig to China for tasty bugs, as everything is frozen solid. They pitifully grumble as they are forced to Eat The Chicken Feed, after first picking through it for invisible surprises.............

What do your chickies do with themselves on cold cooped up days?

OMG, call the Chicken Police! Making those birds eat CHICKEN FEED??? How cruel!
(and I wanna know who started the idea that chicken feed is cheap??)

Actually, my chickies do what most chickies do on cold cooped up days. . . heh . .heh. . .heh. . .

the boys, anyway. I have heard of hanging a head of cabbage in the coop so they have to jump or stretch a bit to get it. Another thing to keep the boys (and girls) happy is to give them some flakes of hay to mess around in and pick thru. I also make warm oatmeal in the microwave, mix in some plain yogurt, BOSS, flax, or what I have on hand. I glop it out on a paper plate, which they then proceed to step in. They can then spend the rest of the day picking wood chips off their sticky feet. Gives 'em sumpin to do . . .

Ravishaw, loved your story about your Barbara getting into the BOSS bag! Way cute!

For everyone who has asked about a "book", I am compiling the Barbara stories to put into one thread, but can't get it finished until after the holidays as I am WAY behind and don't even have my fake tree up yet.

Wheat straw....a bale of wheat straw. It was given to me and in my three coops that one bale provided three days of entertainment. It was free so I have no idea what they cost. But they dug and pecked for three days. There were little surprises in those bales...wheat seeds!

As always, your stories are wonderful, Mrs. Chickendad!!! The descriptions of Barbara stomping around and pooping on the flock block before realizing it was a TREAT (!!!).....so hilarious. You truly have a talent and I look forward to every post; always entertaining and giving a lift to the day!! Thank you so much for sharing!!
