The African and Chinese goose thread!!

Well, are they louder then ducks? I have a rouen duck that is SOO freaking loud, and no one complains. I don't care that shes loud cause I love her. I would really like to get a couple of them though. Would I need to brood them at 3 months old? thats how old they are.

Quote: The floor is covered with one solid roll of scrap linoleum flooring and as both the ducks and geese are quite wet / messy I have to keep the shavings down or it gets really smelly. In the back wall part is really where they each sleep and make nests (on both sides). I keep the food and water to the front and that is typically the messiest part. Once a week I do a full clean out, but almost daily I shovel out the yuck from the front, clean their water, fill food and put down maybe 1/4 of shavings.

Thanks!

Hi! We just got a baby gosling from a wild live rehab. some one found it in their back yard and turned it in. They only deal with wild so she called me. any ideas on age or breed. It has zero feathers. They lady has had it for a week, so I know it is at least a week old.
Memphisjourney2seramas, It looks like my white chinese geese when they were younger (see page 8 of this thread), but I've only had experience with white chinese, so I dont know if they look like another breed too. You should post a new thread on the Geese forum so that more people can take a look & give you their input, just in case.

How does everyone like their white Chinese geese? There are some for sale on CL and I'm thinking about it....
DaffyDuck98, I am very much enjoying my Chinese geese. They're 3 months old, we got them April 9th (hence their names). I would suggest reading up as much as you can on the breed though - use the advance search on this forum. The breed generally more talkative than others, and there are more "friendlier" breeds out there than Chinese Geese. Of course, a lot has to do with how they are raised. I don't have any experience with ducks, so I can't say which is louder, though I would assume geese are. As goslings, the noise level isnt that bad, but their voices change & they get louder. There are a couple of videos on this thread that have them honking, or I'd suggest searching for White Chinese geese on Youtube to hear them in action.

April usually hogs a yellow bucket, though there is one for each of them. She jumps in and when Nine comes along for a sip of water, she makes a fuss and doesn't like to share. Nine hasn't figured out that there's a perfectly empty bucket right next to that one. Or maybe he has and just wants that one because he thinks its better. "The grass is greener..."

Up close & personal with Nine

April's favorite thing to do

And again...

Finally, here's them NOT helping in the garden

Yep. That's April in the back.

Eee! Saturday...Sunday...Monday they ship out...should get them early Tuesday....tick tock tick tock. :D My sweet pair of Brown African gander & goose will be here soon!

I am loving these pictures. The Chinese Geese from reading peoples stories seem a bit like the Pekin duck to me. Anyone have both? Pekins have big personalities, mine are HUGE talkers and loud ones at that, a little bossy....

Hi Everybody!

I'm soooooooo excited, I finally have Geese!!!!!!!
wee.gif
I have wanted geese for long time and really wanted Pilgrim's but they are so hard to find over here in my area and didn't want to try hatching shipped eggs.....so the wait continued until yesterday morning my dear hubby was reading an ad on Craigslist that a gal whose boyfriend up and left her for someone on facebook......left his geese behind and she cannot take care of them so she was lookingto rehome.
The ad stated that she had a female that was currently in the middle of a hatch and had 5 goslings under her. Total number of birds listed in the ad were 5, 2 males and 3 females and the goslings.

I get there and indeed there are 5 birds that she talked about plus 2 juveniles and another one of the adult females was broody and setting, due to hatch anyday. COOL! My only worries were that the move would so upset the Mamma's.......well it did, but on the ride home 2 more babies hatched.

Got home and got everyone settled into their new digs and immediately both broodies got off the eggs and babies. Left a few of the eggs and took the rest and candled them and then switched out the rest to candle them. Out of her 28 eggs she had, I gave her back 5 total.

When I left the loving family to settle down, Mamma had gone back to her babies and the other broody was settling back down on her eggs as I walked away. I checked on them several times and everything seemed to be going good.....until I notice on the last few trips of checking on them that Mamma seems irritated and is not wanting to set and the babies all want to follow her and she doesn't want anything to do with them. 11PM I just can't take it any longer and run down in the dark and pouring down rain to check on them once again.....and notice 2 goslings missing and the latest to hatch, lying out in the middle of the floor cold and looked dead...was almost dead it was soooooooo cold. I decided right them to take all the babies away and put them in a brooder. An hour later, I had to check for those 2 missing babies......I found them hiding under the ramp that goes outside. I put them in with their siblings and the little one that was almost dead was is doing fine this morning. All the babies are doing good this morning.

I knew the move would be hard on them, poor guys.

So cool! Congrats!

Here's the gang this morning out checking out their new surroundings.

How in the heck do you all tell these guys and gals apart? I can tell the males from the females, but telling who is who from there is just out of the question right now, LOL. It will definitely take some time.

Going Bhonkers and PandaPaw, I have enjoyed looking at the photos of your Chinese Whites as they have grown. They are both beautiful. Lets me fill in the gaps on what Ninya looked like as a baby growing up. While we have a ways to go with little Ninya, I can picture her fully feathered now.
