Hi Everybody!
I'm soooooooo excited, I finally have Geese!!!!!!!
I have wanted geese for long time and really wanted Pilgrim's but they are so hard to find over here in my area and didn't want to try hatching shipped eggs.....so the wait continued until yesterday morning my dear hubby was reading an ad on Craigslist that a gal whose boyfriend up and left her for someone on facebook......left his geese behind and she cannot take care of them so she was lookingto rehome.
The ad stated that she had a female that was currently in the middle of a hatch and had 5 goslings under her. Total number of birds listed in the ad were 5, 2 males and 3 females and the goslings.
I get there and indeed there are 5 birds that she talked about plus 2 juveniles and another one of the adult females was broody and setting, due to hatch anyday. COOL! My only worries were that the move would so upset the Mamma's.......well it did, but on the ride home 2 more babies hatched.
Got home and got everyone settled into their new digs and immediately both broodies got off the eggs and babies. Left a few of the eggs and took the rest and candled them and then switched out the rest to candle them. Out of her 28 eggs she had, I gave her back 5 total.
When I left the loving family to settle down, Mamma had gone back to her babies and the other broody was settling back down on her eggs as I walked away. I checked on them several times and everything seemed to be going good.....until I notice on the last few trips of checking on them that Mamma seems irritated and is not wanting to set and the babies all want to follow her and she doesn't want anything to do with them. 11PM I just can't take it any longer and run down in the dark and pouring down rain to check on them once again.....and notice 2 goslings missing and the latest to hatch, lying out in the middle of the floor cold and looked dead...was almost dead it was soooooooo cold. I decided right them to take all the babies away and put them in a brooder. An hour later, I had to check for those 2 missing babies......I found them hiding under the ramp that goes outside. I put them in with their siblings and the little one that was almost dead was is doing fine this morning. All the babies are doing good this morning.
I knew the move would be hard on them, poor guys.
