The African and Chinese goose thread!!

It takes 30 days of incubation for eggs to hatch. Winter temps also play a factor, goslings generally hatch in the spring, but some can hatch in late winter, just depends on how cold it is. Good luck!!

Thanx much! I will make sure and be close by the first week of next month. The "winter" here has not been much, spring flowers are popping up, most signs say its over, but one never knows. I hope she gets a few anyway it would be great to watch them grow!

I think I am the one you are thinking of. I have show quality brown, buff and white Africans. I am also the one you got your Bantam BLRW pair from

Seriously? How did I not put this together! oh my gosh! LOL

BTW I simply adore the little bantams! The rooster is the top roo and he does an amazing job protecting all the girls. And I have some big girls! LOL I collected some of Lady's eggs (we named her Lady lol) and they should be hatching Sunday or so. I hope some of hers made it! They are SO adorable!

Nice article but I am letting Momma do all the work here, I have just put 42 more (chicken) eggs in the bator. I hope she hatches some, it seams to me she is off the nest to long at a time, but she has it covered well with a nice thick pad of johnson grass, weather has not been bad, I hope she knows what she is doing.

I think that's the way to go. My goose has laid 4 eggs so far, we've taken them each time. This last one she covered up so well, makes me feel bad for taking the eggs because its almost like she's thinking, if I hide it real well, it'll be here when I get back - poor thing. But I'm relieved to hear that yours does it too, and you're letting her keep her clutch of eggs.

I think I am wrong about her setting, she was off the nest yesterday, sun shining bright, eggs exposed, there is now 18 eggs and the other goose has dropped one in the yard. It was much smaller than the first girls eggs, I hope she makes a nest too.

We have some cold weather coming in, (low mid 20's high in the 30's (f)) should I be concerned about her eggs?

I may get a goose or two from tractor supply when i get my duckling, witch one would be best free ranging on a 2.5 acre pond? Will they be able to house with ducks?
Will you only be getting one duckling? Im going to assume that you don't own other ducks at the moment - if this is the case, you may want to get a female goose, as males, being larger than ducks may pose a danger to them.
If you do already have other ducks, I would suggest getting 2 geese (either Male/Female, Female/Female). Two geese is best case scenario, not only for companionship, but for flock/species identity. Miss Lydia on here had a single Goose (gander) raised with her ducks. The gander grew up thinking it was a duck, this is kind of a problem because geese are natural grazers, ducks are not. Miss Lydia added a goose to her backyard flock and her solo gander learned to behave like a Goose.

And as far as which goose to get, check out some of these descriptions to find your best fit: https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/618185/raising-geese-101#post_8210407

Housing: most people house geese & ducks separately, but of those that house them together, they mention having a lot of space so that ducks dont find themselves in the goose's way

Where is the goose's nest? Is it in a shelter of some kind? Your goose may not be serious about hatching them just yet (she may be waiting for warmer weather!) You may want to check the nest for any bad eggs

She has built her nest behind some blocks (to build a retaining wall), it is exposed to the elements and I think she is just tending it, turning the eggs ect. After a rain she had it opened up,, adjusting the humidity(?). The area is now fenced off from the rest of the yard, (ok they are not closed in they just think they are)

IF she culled an egg how far from the nest would she push it? The egg I found out in the yard had a crack in it (which I assumed was from dropping on a stone) and was about 30 feet from the nest (up hill). I think this egg came from the other goose (she is smaller and less developed) as the egg was smaller than the others in the nest.

On inspecting for bad eggs, other than cracks and bad smells, what should I look for? I do have an LED torch to candle with,,,,,
