Hi,
I am trying to get geese next year, because I had 4 brown chinese/african before, and they were fabulous! I do really like the chines, so can anyone give me some info on them? I can probably only have 3 so can the independantly hatch eggs and be a good mother. Also, are these birds good at fighting dogs? LOL! If not, which breed? I was going to get a bigger breed, like Emden, but then they eat more and lay less eggs, right?

Ok ive africans and i love them because i got them when they were 10 months and were scared but until i started giving them corn maize they are tamer then ever and embdens lay more eggs not by much and all geese are good against dogs but pomeraions are good and steinbachers 100% (steinbachers are quiet rare tho)

Please, understand. No goose of any size or breed is a match for a dog if that dog means business.
Geese are alarms/alerts but NOT a guardian. A gander will valiantly defend his flock, but don't place them at risk of being slaughtered.
I am stating this to save you a lot of heartbreak and grief, and a horrible loss you won't ever forgive yourself for.
Brown chinese are regal, loyal, and just beautiful. They can be loud, and will tell you immediately if someone or thing does not belong in their yard!
I own brown & white chinese, embden and african. None eat more than the other IMO.
You will need a gander to have fertile eggs. Chinese do lay longer and are broody. Definitely strong, dependable mothers.

Ditto on the thing about fighting with dogs.....My neighbour has chinese. Even the family is frightened to go near them. Another neighbour´s dog had no trouble dispatching a fearsome gander. Geese are king-sized bluffers.

Ive good story to tell :-D
There is a man that owns a massive garage 2 miles up where i live and he got burgulared everyweek and the police couldent do anything and his dogs were also really bad guarddogs but he got a brown chinese gander from someone in his realtions to take care for a few months because the person that gave the gander needed to clear his ground ,but anyway the chinese gander straight away was boss of his four dogs and slept at his door and one night middnight the gander went mad and honked so loud it woke up everything and the dogs began to bark and the garageowner check the gander and tryed shut him up until he saw someone running away and he was shocked but didnt call the police but two nights later the chinese gander did it again and this time the man snook to take a look and saw 3 people (no idea if man or woman )and he called the police and 15 minutes later the police caught two of the people and the man was so proud of the brown chinese gander that he bought him off the person who gave him it to take care for and bought more later on and he breeds them this day on and now and then the gander honks mad in the middle of the night of strange things (foxes espically) and humans ! I told you this story because from then on notting was stolen and the things the people stole were very expensive (Car engines,exhausts,window screens,tyres, and crates espically and i live in a wealthy posh area and the things in the garage are for very expensive cars (merceades,bentleys,aston martins, and Audis and BMW espically)and since he has that gander he saves thousands of euros every week and this only happened in 2011 and last year he had a batch of brown chinese goslings and i bought 4 and the gander is a really nice proper looking brown chinese gander (ill show a pick if i have to go backto the garage ;-) )this one gander saved him thousands and thousands of euros the kept saying

oh and the brown chinese gander is called bobby

Oh in china they use chinese geese to attack people(thiefs and other insane people) instead of dogs which is funny and it started around last year when a white chinese tackled down a thief to the ground and the police were amazed but i still like africans better

Nice story. Do you know that the old English slang for a policeman is Bobby? Funny. Here they call chinese geese "sinaleiros", which pretty well means "signalers" or "alarmers".
