The African and Chinese goose thread!!

I have an unusually small Embden hen that can fly short distances. She freaks out and flies back in. Its a 6 foot fence.
We had electric fencing, but last winter took a lot of it out, so I have to rebuild the wire structure.
Aside from that, they are content and stay in the property. They do not like the visiting canadian flock that comes into our north field.
That really is a wing grabbing, honking, flogging fight when they see them!
Mine all free range 5 acres, all day, and never seem to need to leave the property. I lock up all my birds before dark.
We have a lot of heavy clover that they love, and a nice pond in the back part of the property for them.
Mine will take off running full speed flapping, but the africans/chinese never really seem leave the ground.
All that I have read, and seen as far as Africans, most hatcheries have a mix, they are truly more of a brown chinese cross which is fine by me..
My babies all hatch black legged and turn yellow as they mature. No dewlaps. I do like the personality and temperament of them a lot.
My first choice was brown chinese when I started keeping geese again, so I couldn't be more pleased.
My white chinese X brown are bibbed and just too sweet. Having a hard time parting with any of the goslings

All my hens have stopped laying, so now I have to pick who stays. Hate this part of it.
I added embden last year and have 2 goose, 2 ganders. They are a very large breed of goose, and I am really enjoying them.
The 2 ganders have been excellent guardians.
Really impressed with the breed. I kept them about 30 years ago, and these are much larger, quieter birds.

Yep that's the word i was thinking of but couldn't think of it "territory" Geese stay in their territory and stay there.
They do, We had an interesting afternoon with the canadian geese at the park across the street. They wanted to come to our pasture. right at the edge of the road! My geese said NO, and the canadians were very vocal back! Lots of wawawa and loud honking today!
The canadian flock usually grazes the north pasture. Guess thats not ok with the Chinese ganders anymore! I expect fighting soon. The canadian flock has been over here every summer for 13 years I have been here.
Kinda sad to not see them grazing, but do not want geese perched on the roof at 6 am anymore either.

Typical Chinese guarding their territory and the canadian geese are nearly same size so you will be expecting your geese to fight anytime :-V How old are your chinese?!

My oldest are 2,almost 3 years old now.The parent canadians are getting old, same pair have been coming in for years. they did visit the north pasture and all went well. Really enjoyed watching them all. They dont comingle but do coexist so far. Laying season is over here, so they are all enjoying the clover. Wish I had a camera, was very pleasant to watch.

I love looking at everyone else's pics, couldn't wait to share some of my new babies!

Colby, my Australian Shepherd, with the girls. Greta is nestled up against him, but Gabby was feeling independent & making Colby anxious since he prefers his 'herd' to stay together. :)

They are about a week old here.

This is Gabby, a White Chinese. She was 2 days old in this pic.

And this is Greta, a hatchery African, also 2 days old here.

I've never had geese before and was toying with the idea of adding a couple to my menagerie but wasn't sure. I came across this thread and after reading about everyone else's geese and how cool they are, I made up my mind and just had to have a couple! They arrived July 2nd and I immediately fell in love. During the day they're in a little pen in my kitchen with my Aussie, Colby, to keep them company, then when I get home from work I take them (and Colby of course!) out in the yard and we walk to my parents house next door. They have a little pen in "Grammie's" kitchen too where they hang out while we eat, then after supper we go out to the barn and do chores. Colby comes with us, of course. Sometimes I put them in a carrier and take them for a ride in the car to visit my Gram or my aunt. Greta is quite outgoing and eager for adventure while Gabby is a little more reserved. They both love to be picked up and snuggle and tell Mommy all about their day, I love how chatty they are! They're growing so fast though, I'm in the process of fencing in a little yard at my mom's for them to spend the day in so they'll have a safe place to play outside and graze while I'm at work. Love this site and all the pics & information!

So cute!

sounds like your lil geese have a lovely home! So cute ...I have a Toulouse goose that walks with me & will just chat away. When we get to the end of her area & I go thru the gate she stands there like she cannot belive I went on without her.
Her name is Moe ..& I do believe she knows it. I can be talking to the other geese...then will say her name & she will immediately give me all of her attention.
I am curious as there has been some converstation on this site about African Geese..mostly along the lines of most of the geese that are passed off as African are actually Chinese Browns or African crosses. Now to my question...did the hatchery guarantee that your "African" was indeed an African? I honestly do not know the difference..my geese are geese & although it is nice to know what they are, each is individual in temperament & action no matter what you call them.
the pics of your babies are really cute..indeed they grow rapidly...they are big birds!!

I am curious about it too, the "hatchery africans" I have are larger and taller than my white chinese, have different voices. But adults legs are some to mostly yellow. Either way, they are my babies, and they are staying! I cancelled my brown chinese order to be honest, partially due to this concern.. and my dads open heart surgery too, of course.
