I have an unusually small Embden hen that can fly short distances. She freaks out and flies back in. Its a 6 foot fence.
We had electric fencing, but last winter took a lot of it out, so I have to rebuild the wire structure.
Aside from that, they are content and stay in the property. They do not like the visiting canadian flock that comes into our north field.
That really is a wing grabbing, honking, flogging fight when they see them!
Mine all free range 5 acres, all day, and never seem to need to leave the property. I lock up all my birds before dark.
We have a lot of heavy clover that they love, and a nice pond in the back part of the property for them.
Mine will take off running full speed flapping, but the africans/chinese never really seem leave the ground.
All that I have read, and seen as far as Africans, most hatcheries have a mix, they are truly more of a brown chinese cross which is fine by me..
My babies all hatch black legged and turn yellow as they mature. No dewlaps. I do like the personality and temperament of them a lot.
My first choice was brown chinese when I started keeping geese again, so I couldn't be more pleased.
My white chinese X brown are bibbed and just too sweet. Having a hard time parting with any of the goslings
.
All my hens have stopped laying, so now I have to pick who stays. Hate this part of it.
I added embden last year and have 2 goose, 2 ganders. They are a very large breed of goose, and I am really enjoying them.
The 2 ganders have been excellent guardians.
Really impressed with the breed. I kept them about 30 years ago, and these are much larger, quieter birds.
