The Aloha Chicken Project

Thanks you guys. I don't know why it's always the favorite, best, sweetest, etc. bird. Heavy sigh. I should have had her mated to that German New Hamp. I am just kicking myself that I didn't get that done. I'm going to slip the other ginger hen, the red hen and the odd hen in with the German New Hamp this evening.

The upside is that I have a couple (undetermined number) of Nicoletta's eggs in the incubator. I just hatched my first batch of chicks for the season but they weren't separated so I don't know who is who. Only one Aloha hatched out of this group of 20+ birds. But I have two larger hatches in the incubator (40+ eggs each) that has a couple/several more possibilities. I'm going to either sew up some bobbinette bags to put the eggs in when they go into lockdown or find some sort of plastic thing to put them in. I'll cinch up the bag and they'll have room to hatch but they will also be separated till I can get a wingband on them.

My hatch rate was pretty good, I'm not quite finished hatching so don't have the final count, but the system is working well. I'm still crazy with anxiety at hatch time so that needs a little work.

I only opened the little GQF I'm using as a hatcher once, but it was because the majority had hatched and they were piling up on one another till I couldn't take it any more. So I got a towel wet with very warm water and draped it over the bator and my hands and handed the chicks out to DD who put them in the brooder. Worked great and 3 more have hatched since so apparently it kept the humidity from dropping too much.

Glad you found the thread!  I can't wait to see the Leghorn cross chicks!  I totally would have thought pink legs from the Sussex, and all white from the Leghorn.  Goes to show I still have SO much to learn!  And so much of this stuff is just . . . unknown???

here are a few pics of Leghorn Sussex crosses.

that hen would have to be carrying one copy of the yellow skin gene then... if you crossed her with a yellow legged rooster 50% of her chicks should be yellow legged... if u crossed her with a rooster carrying yellow legs 25% would show yellow...
Awesome, I just put her in with this colorful roo with yellow legs. He is small so the chicks won't be huge, but all should have a TON of white, and if half have yellow legs that would be fabulous!

If I could wave my magic wand, I might try her with my new super spotty Pumpkin roo. But I would want to start with a hen with this much spotting plus the bright yellow legs.

Unfortunately, I don't really have the room to raise a batch of Basque to adulthood to try and pick one out. But if a local breeder ends up with a hen like this, I would pay a good amount for her to give her a shot in the program and see what she throws. Would need a very bright rooster but I think my new Pumpkin boy or the half Swedish half Aloha roo I have could work too. Just lack of room to try all of these different possibilities. Let me know if you'd like to give it a shot, I can send a few eggs to you, which probably wouldn't do any good to someone starting an Aloha program from scratch, as in the past the poor hatch rates of shipped eggs rarely gave anyone enough hens to get a real start. But if all you need is one colorful Aloha roo to try over a flock of Basque hens, I think it would be fascinating to see the results.
That would be awesome! I also have Swedish Flower Hens to add to the mix but I think I would just try Basque at first.

Here are a few pics of my swedish:

Just got back from Stephen's and we set up a breeder pen with the new Sussex roo! WOW is he spotty! Not as big as the less spotty boy that we had last year, but his color is outstanding. He even has spots on his back which is unusual. Keep in mind he's only six months old, too - he is going to get more white as he matures.

I selected five of my absolute most favorite hens to put with him, seen in these pics. Then, we found a gorgeous Ginger hen, beautiful but tiny, and then we added Nui's mom, who is a HUGE hen who is first generation Aloha from a part Orp mom. I got Nui when I hatched out an egg from her this first-gen hen and the Sussex rooster, and Nui is much larger than most hatchery Sussex. So I'm crossing my fingers that I'll get more hens like Nui from this cross.

Basically, once the DNA is settled, I want to find a way to hatch EVERY SINGLE EGG that comes from this pen this spring!

*Five of the hens in here have yellow legs, so many of the chicks will carry for yellow legs. Only the Ginger hen and Nui's mom have white legs.

He now has seven girls of his own . . . yay!
