The Aloha Chicken Project

5moore, love that hen! Chicks are adorbs, too.

So here is my lone Buff Sussex/Speckled Sussex cross:

Cell phone pics but look at the outline of white dots around her wings, interesting. Her legs have very def turned white and what's up with the downward tail? Is that going to change, anyone know?

You can barely see faint mottling underneath. Her head width is okay and her legs are straight and well placed.

Candled my 48 in the bator and came up with 85% fertility this time. The bad news is that I am down to only 3 left of my pretty Aloha girl's eggs. She's pretty fast and can outrun that big Buff Sussex!

On the upside I have 5, maybe 6, eggs developing from the Buff/Speckled crosses doing well. I hope I get a couple more girls out of this batch.

I would also love to know what the deal is with the downward tail. I gave my neighbor a bunch of Aloha Naked Necks (some of which may be out of the Buff Sussex roo, or Thing 1 or Thing 2, which are also related to the Waltz's Ark Buff Sussex rooster) and wouldn't you know it, the most promising baby in terms of color has this downward tail thing going on as well. I have no idea what it is or if it will stay that way? Just wanted to let you know (since our Buff Sussex lines are related) that I saw it here as well on one chick, ?????

Sommer what do you think about this pullet?
I wish she had a lot more spotting, but she does have yellow legs and a bright red base color. From what I can see her body type and shape is looking decent. How is her size?

I think if you had (for example) a nicely spotted Speckled Sussex rooster and were looking to add yellow leg gene plus remove some of the black in the babies, she would be very helpful. But crossed to solid chickens - not so much. So her "partner" would need to have some pronounced mottling.

Like she may cross great to a Speckled Sussex like this, with good round breast and nice spotting, even up on his neck:

But would not be such a great cross with a Speckled Sussex like this dark one:

Keep an eye out on your local BYC thread or on your local Craigslist in case a super spotty Sussex pops up. She could be a really great hen to cross with Speckled Sussex!!!

alohachickens, I had the kids color the Aloha hen's vent with blue food coloring so I could be sure I was correct in which eggs I thought she was laying. It worked a treat but then, guess what I found back in the kitchen cabinet?

Yup, the blue food coloring. So, to the teen age mind, items used on a chicken's arse are fine in a kitchen cabinet. I just knew it! Needless to say, it is no longer located in the kitchen cabinet. No need to gag me with a spoon, this worked just fine.

alohachickens, just saw your response regarding my Buff/Speckled girls funky tail. If it's not one thing, it's another, eh? I sure hope that tail comes up as she matures. I had a couple White Rock girls who are much faster maturing, and they had droopy tails. I just noticed that the most mature hen's tail has come up so I hope it works out with this girl.

I think my B/SX cross girls would be a great cross with the cockerels I may get from the rooster you will be using for my hatching eggs. Let's just keep our fingers crossed I get one with lots of white to brighten them up.

Deerfield I'm afraid I'm with your teenagers on this one

- I too would have put the food coloring back in the kitchen. Unless I had stuck the nozzle UP the chicken's butt, I can't see how just having it NEAR a chicken and drizzling a little of the contents on the butt would contaminate it at all. Just sayin'..... Now if I had set it down on the ground where there is likely to be poop well then I would wipe it off before putting it away obviously

If I had been the one to do the drizzling, I would not feel squeamish at all. These are the 3 younger teens and anything is possible with 2 of them, as in, if Mom didn't see it, it didn't happen. I hope very sincerely it didn't go UP the butt for the chicken's sake, but it wouldn't be odd for them to "bump" the butt or feathers, or any number of "I didn't mean to's" to have happened and it still end up in the kitchen. I had planned to do it myself but we got ready to go out and I had to sit down. My blood pressure dropped and I had to drop to keep from dropping so they just trooped on out and with a lack of blood in my brain cells, I let them. LOL!

Hi all! Posting a few pics of some of my flock that I have 'accidently' stumbled upon some interestingly colored chicks. I was gifted a New Hampshire Red we named Ricky, I have 2 speckled Sussex, Rose and Lil Bit, and a Naked Neck named Sharlet, among others. When we began hatching from Ricky I noticed all these pretty colors! So my search began and I found Aloha chickens! Wow! I love seeing all the other pics, hope this first generation of ours is half as cute!
