The American Cemani Breeders Club...open forum

Indeed Pyxis. Observing these youngsters is quite entertaining. I have never witnessed such an incredible appetite for something so small. They also exhibit an innate behavior for survival. From a sprint when startled to a complete stop. I believe they have also established a hierarchy.

I agree that standards are important Boykin,

Sooo,
I have one humble request for all you fine 2014 Cemani producing Americans, who are hatching this year... right now...

Please make sure that your 2014 prices stay very competitive with Greenfire's
So that we, who have to wait to hatch next year, can also command a solid price to make up for any fiscal short falls that come with also practicing "breeders judgment"...

I think we all can agree that a high breed standard is important if we are all to command a just and high profit...

United we stand.

What do you guys think of this suggestion?

I would like to add that my 6 Cemanis are direct descendants of GreenFire. The breeder I purchased them from purchased his breeding pair from a lady in Colorado who purchased them from GreenFire. She had to sell due to neighborhood covinants. These chicks are his second hatch. I looked at the off-spring from the first which are older pullets, including inside the mouth...black as can be. Hopefully all of mine are excellent examples as well.

Transitioned the chicks from floor feeding to feeder. Didn't take them long to figure it out...:)

I will be posting 2 week old photos on Friday.

My theory on comb sexing Ayam Cemainis continued;

Here are my Cemanis on their 2 week anniversary. It is impressive how much change has occurred in seven days with respect to their combs. At this point I will without question identify my green banded Cemani as a cockerel, "Alejandro" (I made the same prediction on week 1). His comb already has deep serrations, high points & each point is well defined.

I have taken it a step farther & have indicated which ones I feel are male/female. However, even though I labeled my white (#5) banded Cemani a female, I think there is still a chance it might change. Its points are somewhat well defined however he/she might need more time. I am almost certain I can make an accurate assessment on he/she's 3rd week anniversary.

Please give me your thoughts.

Thank you.

I took some time today to inspect all of the chicks’ exterior colors & mouth colors. I did not photograph inside their mouths. I did not want to risk placing too much stress on them at this age. I opened each beak for a few seconds for a quick but accurate assessment.

I am happy to report all of the birds passed their exterior color inspections with flying colors (pardon the pun) & are all true to the breed, including beaks & toes. All of them are jet black.

Three of the birds are spot on with respect to their mouth inspections. I classified their color as dark gray but can easily be classified as black. Two of the birds I classified as tan & one as pink. I can only assume the tan ones will darken over time. As for the pink one, I assume the pink will be more pronounced over time.

If anyone has ever inspected your birds (mouth parts) at this age (2 weeks old) please give me some insight as to what to expect with the tan & pink birds as they mature.

Thank you.

I looked at the mouth photo of your AC on FB. Maybe I'm wrong but the color looks tan & not dark gray or black. Am I missing something?

Randy doesn't breed ayam cemanis any more. That picture I think was just something he put up to show the inside of one of the mouths on the birds he got direct from GFF because someone asked him to. That particular post you quoted is about four years old now.

I'm gonna need to snap some pictures of my growouts. They're looking really nice. I have a couple definite cockerels, will have to see how they do growing out so I can select my breeding cock for next year. Unfortunately one that I hatched on St. Patrick's Day and kept back is probably not going to make the cut. It wasn't quite up to my usual standards but wasn't bad, and it hatched on a holiday which is fun so I was going to see what it grew out like and maybe put it in the breeding pen if it was a pullet, or if it didn't grow out well put in in my EE pen. So of course it's a cockerel. It's not bad by any means, just didn't hatch dark enough that I would want to consider using it as a breeding cock when I'll have better options. I am being very picky this year.

I've also got some younger groups growing up and one more batch to hatch. We'll have to see what comes of them too.

Thank you so much Pyxis for responding to my request & my apologies for not reading farther into the thread. 273 pages is a bit overwhelming. ;)

Do you have records with respect to mouth colors, i.e.; black, dark gray, tan, etc to use as reference to what your stock has developed into now? In addition, can you please tell me what breeder your stock is from? Mine are direct descendents of GFF. Everything I've researched with respect to this breeder is very good. Can you please give me your opinion here as well?

Looking forward to your photos.

Again, many thanks!
