Not sure, but I just ordered size 9 and 11 bandettes to try on them since I have different lines and two breeds that look a lot alike. I want to keep each line color codes. Plan on using same color zip ties as the bandettes to help keep track on which chick belongs to which line. Also to help me since the Svart Hona chicks will look the same also.

I just bought 1000 of each size mixed colors of the spiral bands PM me and I'll be happy to send you some or anyone else who wants to try them, I'll never use that many in a zillion years! I got them from Kuhl in NJ. If you need chicken supplies it is a great place and they have great prices!

Hi

I figured I might as well introduce myself. My name is Rachael and I am retired and raise rare breed chickens. I mostly share my eggs with friends, 4-h kids and anyone who asks. It is my hobby. We don't have any kids so I am blessed to be able to have a lot of. Rare breed birds. I have a lot of GFF stuff, imported orps, Bahamas, seramas well some of everything for everyone. I am the local "chicken lady". We sponsor a lot of youth in chickens and are setting up programs to give trios of rare breed birds to stay at hone moms so we can teach them to help their families by selling hatching eggs.

I also have a swap where we like to share our rare breed eggs with each other.

Check it out if you are so inclined

Hi Rachael, nice to see you on here. Boykin2010 here (Ewe Crazy Farms, actually)
Glad to see someone else working with both Svart Honas and Ayam cemanis.

I was told that if I choose to show my birds at the state fair or sale them to customers in other states that I need a NPIC certification...

I live in NC

What is your advice on this?

NPIP - National Poultry Improvement Plan
You have to be certified NPIP before you can show or before you can legally ship birds or eggs across state lines.

I had mine done about a month ago and just got my paper work back this week with my card. I have the guy name and number if you need it.

I was told by Rodger at sumner Byrd farm
that it did not matter as long as you sale less than 2000 birds a year. Or less than 2000 dozen eggs per year.

He also said that I did not need it at the nc state fair because they test all birds before they are allowed to be shown.

He said it is a nice thing to have but for small operations like mine that it is just opening the door to have the state to climb up into your business and property.

Did I misunderstand him?
I want to do this right.
But I also do not want to take on any uneccesary risks including government over site and over reach.

If that is all true:
Since I will be producing well below 2000 birds.

I wonder if I can just offer a veterinarian certification of good health with each bird sold out of state will be more than enough of a guarantee to satisfy my online customers.

here is another fun detail of todays fact finding mision.

When I said I needed incubation practice before I start my own eggs,
the fella at Sumner Byrd Farm suggested that if I buy my first batch of hatching eggs from him
that he will buy back all my chicks to get more eggs, to sale him the chicks, to get more eggs...

Repeat until I become an incubation expert with a 90% or better consistant hatch rate.

I told him I could care less what breed of bird this process would produce.
So, he gets to pick the eggs he needs birds from and I get educated.

We both win.
