The American Cemani Breeders Club...open forum

Are cemani prone to get frostbite here in the Midwest with winter temps climbing down to below zero degrees to negative -20? I know Cemani are from hot humid tropical Indonesia, how will they handle snow and extreme cold temps?

Any proven ways to protect their soft comb/wattles beside having to keep light on in their coops?

Mine didn't seem to have any problems here in Maryland. We had one of the worst winters on records. The problem is how would you know if there was frostbite? But that is kind of one of the differences between Ayam Cemani and Svart Hona. Svart Hona are from Sweden and it gets really cold there so they should be much more adapted to the cold than Cemani.

Mines comb isn't as dark as yours and others that have better line that have been work on a bit. So i'm sure i'll see frostbite, if it should happen. That is right forgot that really well breed birds with really dark color comb/wattles, would be harder to detect frostbite. Maybe I should have gone with Svart Hona then

But I can't afford any of those either atm.

Do you get snow and below zero temps in Maryland, seem that your state is right on the coast maybe not? Guess i'll just have to wait and see how it goes this winter or go the safe route and keep lights on....decisions decisions..............................................

Yes, lots and lots of snow and subzero temps last year. The waterers would freeze in 15 minutes.

For those who have TM hens; how big are their eggs? For their size I'm pretty impressed with the size of the egg. Although it is small. Thanks

The egg size will increase as your hen gets older. In fact, I would avoid trying to set any eggs for several months after they start laying. That will give you healthier chicks with fewer hatching issues.

I haven't weighed one in a while, but I think they are a medium sized eggs. My Kedu seem to be slightly better layers but the eggs are identical in size and color.

I will have a very small handful of eggs for sale down the road this year and they will be solid black some should have black blood also with no culls when hatched 300.00 per egg and up. Pairs will be 5,000 and up

Makes GFF price of 2K a pair seem a veritable bargain!

I was wondering if there are other breeders who are planning on selling improved eggs and birds next year (or even this year), and what they are planning to get for their birds/eggs.

Black blood? Like you're saying the blood is black?
