Steadfast,

I also have some of Mike's birds which I am keeping as a separate line along with my TM Astin line. I plan on keeping records for both lines using the same feed, similar housing, etc. If you do the same we can set a baseline for Mike's line.
Sounds good to me DC...

BTW: Wanna trade a rooster for a hen?
I got stuck with 2 extra roos...

ps. I have several folks that are inquiring about them...
just waiting for just two of them to commit...better move fast!

No more roos for me. One of my Spring hatches resulted in 16 Cemani cockerels and 4 pullets. They are scheduled to go for processing in August. With my poultry feed bill already $240 a month, I can't keep any more than the 30 or so roosters I already have. Plus I just set another 20 Cemani eggs and plan to set more next week. This is the year of the rooster for me.

Nice....

Most folks have no way of pricing these yet...
What do you guys think I should charge each for my extra roosters?

I have tried selling extra roos. It's a tough sell. You might have to pair them with pullets to sell them as the only thing people want right now are trios. Even pairs are a hard sell since they want to collect at least one egg per day. People want to breed and sell chicks. You need one roo and lots of pullets to do that. So you might try $75 each cockerel. It also depends upon whether or not they have black tongues. If they have black (and not gray or pink) tongues plus black vent, toes, skin, etc., then you could easily get $500-$900 each if you can find the right buyer. But that's the problem I refer back to. Everyone wants trios right now to start the instant flock.

If the roosters aren't all black and aren't good enough to keep in a breeding program, the most obvious option would be to cull.
I agree. But there is one exception. If you find a farmer that wants to breed black meat birds, the roosters would have value to that market. But finding that buyer is the hard part. Plus a farmer is not going to pay that much for a rooster.

Maybe if someone wants one just to add another line to their stock they would buy one. Try rarebreedsauction.com but again, it depends on the quality as to what ppl would pay.

Everyone under the sun (including the people that already have the other lines) grabbed a pair from Mike's line when he put them up for $150. So Mike both set the market price for his line as well as flooded the market with his Cemani line. Almost every TM Astin line breeder bought a pair. I don't know all the Greeenfire line breeders but I assume the same is probably true. If they could afford to pay Greenfire's price, another $150 for a pair from Mike is just like a rounding error.

Steadfast, if you do decide to try rarebreedauctions.com make sure to crystal clear photographs. Go buy a new camera if you have to. That is a tough site to sell on. It's the same group of buyers every week on that site. And they are very experience buyers. Great photos that clearly show and demonstrate any coloration in the combs, wattles, or feathers will go a long way. Notice that there is one Cemani seller on there that never sells a single bird. That is because the seller tried to trick buyers with clearly photoshoped images. I buy all the time on that site and know a lot of the buyers. Even I won't sell on that site because I don't want to get dragged through the street. I prefer to sell local. Swaps are the place to sell without people tossing stones. :)

It's the same seller that's on eBay. And the pictures are still the same. That says something. There must be something to hide.

I sell on there and have bought A LOT on there as well. It can be hit or miss. I do believe that ppl are coming to that site as chickens (rare breeds) are becoming more and more popular. Also depends on the time of year and time of month. As DCchicken said, make sure you have nice pics and clearly state what you have and the quality. Even if it's not 100% black ppl will appreciate the honesty and know what they're getting.
