So happy to read the gay-ish tones of the mouth isn't a huge disqualifier!

I see darker and lighter patches in mine once matured... started with lighter grey mouths...

Hey all! I am REALLY wanting to get into cemani! I've heard they're getting closer to setting breed standard so they can be shown. I have a chicken loving 4 year old that will be eligible for 4H in a few years and I think ayam cemani would be the coolest project for him to do since black is our thing. We raise registered black Angus cattle and all of our other animals are pure black. I live in Idaho and I've looked into greenfire but that seems like a really long way to ship live chicks. If anyone can point me in the direction of getting some eggs that I can incubate I would very much appreciate it. Regardless of whether we end up being able to show them or not we would love to have them on our farm.

I think Ayam Cemani would be a great project, if you can invest the time and money to selectively build your own. I'm just getting started with them, after starting with one unsuitable for breeding who really won me over on the looks of the breed. I now have a good pair and am working on getting another.

Once mine are laying age, I will be setting eggs, and hope to get 1 out of 20 that are good enough to add to the breeding pens. After a couple of years I hope to have birds that are better than the parent stock I started with. A breeding program is a great way to teach genetics, selection, culling and all the other things you have to do to improve a breed. And starting with decent stock will hep you jump start your program. Best of luck!

Best of luck on your search for AC! Although, I wouldn't be too worried about the shipping distance between Greenfire and Idaho. Chicks are routinely shipped from coast to coast with great success and Greenfire has excellent shipping practices. I've received chicks from California to Alabama in just 2 days with 100% alive on arrival, and recently received 12 chicks from Greenfire (Florida to Alabama) which took roughly 3 days with the same results. In the event that you do lose some chicks in transit, Greenfire will reimburse you for your losses.
