You're probably referring to chicks that people hatched from an eBay seller known as bobfarm. That seller was a scammer - he sent eggs that hatched like that to many people, always calling them purebred ayam cemanis and when questioned about the chicks that hatched looking like that would tell people they were purebred ayam cemanis that hatched in "wild type" color, something that does not exist.

They're cute! Unfortunately though that's not what that seller was sending people - he was just selling mixed breed eggs and calling them ACs to capitalize on the high price of ACs at the time, and then when questioned about the mixed chicks people were hatching he doubled down and insisted they were purebred ACs in a different color that does not exist.

what a clown... been thinking about getting some ACs or perhaps Svart Honas since it is cold here.... since this is an AC thread... what are the pros of ACs over SHs?
I don't have SHs so I can't compare, but ACs don't have trouble with the cold and I don't know how that got started. I live in VT. My ACs live in a coop that has a totally open wire front. They do not have trouble with the cold. So cold hardiness shouldn't really be a deciding factor.

Those chicks aren't really hers, they're Fibro EEs. She's not fussed about that.I also have a pullet that was hatched in December on the nest, her first time. Her eggs will hatch in about four days, so we'll see how she does.

Hi all. A lot of great information on here and a bit overwhelming!
I'd appreciate if someone could succinctly outline qualities to look for in buying breeding stock as chicks and/or adults.
i.e. check their toes for this, combs for that, look for this body and tail shape, etc.

For chicks, look for any signs that their fibro expression isn't complete, like white toenails, white/orange on the toes, and white wing tips.
For adults, you of course also want to check the fibro expression, and avoid birds with color leakage or any color feathers other than black. A bird with a white toenail or two could be used when starting out if all black birds can't be found.
As for body shape, comb, etc, look for birds most resembling the proposed standard.
