The American Paint Silkie

I have produced birds that are dominant white (like your bird) that leak the red color (see my avatar). Birds that carry silver will not produce a bird like yours. Birds have to be hybrid to produce the color you see. You can produce more but it will be difficult to control the amount of red that will show. You want to use the male that produced this bird for breeding others. He carries the gold gene that is making the bird red. I would back cross the female ( i am assuming the bird in the picture is a female) to the male and you should produce some more birds. If too much red is showing in the offspring- you can cross to another paint to help reduce the amount of red color. It all depends on if your parent birds carry the gold gene.

OK guys, need a little help here. I've been hatching some paints. Out of one of the first batches I hatched, I have this one chick that was born white, but started developing spots after about 3 weeks. Then "she" started developing more spots, but they are red! So now I have a Tri-colored paint. Has this ever happened to anyone before? Is this something I should cull, or should I keep it and see if I can reproduce it? I think it's cool looking... here are some pics....

What do you think? Anyone have anything like this?? When the first red spot showed up, I thought somebody pooped on her, but then there were more and more until I finally picked her up to see what was going on. The red seems to be just on the tips of the feathers right now, not all the way down the shaft like the black spots.

Is it just really dark leakage??

Thanks for the input Tim! I am trying to learn more about genetics, but most of it still sounds like Greek to me! I will keep this one around and see how it develops. I keep saying it's a "she", but I don't think that's true... I think it is a cockerel just from it's demeanor. So in that case, would I breed it back to it's mother to see if I can get more red paints? And would the offspring likely be just red and white without the black spots? I thought it was interesting that it had both colors of spots, but the red is getting more predominate. I can't wait to see if the red feathers eventually carry the color all the way down the shaft... does the bird in your avatar have solid red feathers or is it just on the tips? Pretty bird either way.. was just wondering....

@TwinMapleRanch:

I don't have any help to give on that red paint, although I do think it's neat!

I just had to say that the chicks in your avatar look a lot like a couple chicks of mine! I think it's very funny. Here are pictures when they were little:

And here they are now: (maybe a look into the future on what yours will look like

Wow, sure is cute. It will be interesting to see if the white spots stay and get bigger. Please keep posting pictures.
