The American Paint Silkie

Pics
There ARE paint splashes. In Sigrid's silkie book there are photos of them. They look very similar to a regular splash, but have distinct black (or dark blue) patches. I have no idea about the birds in question...but it is genetically possible according to Sigrid Van Dort.

The darker one looks splash and it's hard for me to tell on the lighter one. If you could get an shot of one of the individual darker feathers we could tell a lot better. The feather should be solid black.

Mate to a black (make sure it is not a dark blue). If you get any paints they will be white with blue spots if the bird is paint AND splash. If you get all solid blues, most likely splash but not paint. If you get paints with black spots, the bird is paint only.

Fairly new to the whole silkie family. I am just a Back Yard breeder. been to a couple of shows and that's how I really became hooked on the breed. My question is I live in the center of Alabama and attend some chicken auctions in the area. Ran up on a paint roo. I was in awe and bought him fast.... I have bred him to some nice quality black hens and have gotten 6 paint babies 3 black from the hatch so far, curious will the blacks carry the paint gene? Or is it like the cuckoo? Has to be seen to carry?

Welcome! Glad to have you here. Enjoyed talking to you. Maybe, Sonoran will pop in and help you out with the question on the blacks. She is our genetic person here

someone bought a black/silver male from paints from me last fall,
mated him to a white American female and got paint chicks from the mating.
