The American Paint Silkie

Ok so I had set 8 eggs from my paint roo pen...got 7 paints clearly marked and 1 black

And set 6 eggs from my black roo (from paint breeding)... Got 2 partridge, 1 paint, 3 odd colors...blue? A soft blue? Pretty but not what I was after...

Were his hens paints or were you thinking you would get paint offspring from him because he was from paint breeding? I dont know too much about paint breeding . I did a paint to paint breeding and only got 2 out of 8 with paint markings. Im hoping some of the whites will get spots later.

With the black roo...I have a white hen, and two paint hens...so I do not think that he threw paint babies...he was from paint breeding...
That is interesting.. my understanding is that most people put the paints with and unrelated black ( not necessarily from paint breeding) for breeding and they dont have to carry the paint to produce it bred to a paint. Maybe it was just bad luck this time ?

I'd try it again. i have bred many paints using one paint roo over BBS hens. of the solids produced i would still breed them back to paint and expect to get paints.I no longer breed paint to white, too hard to tell white babies vs paints that will get spots later.

Thanks Hoppy...my paint roo gave me some very pretty chicks...I have a blue, black, paint, and my orange frosted hens in with him...

My black roo is not very nice and is pretty wild for some reason??? So I am moving him on...

I wish I had the room to really work with a variety...but I am super happy with my chicks and we will see how they grow...

hey yall im all new to this , ok so heres my story : i had a bunch of white silkies for about a year and they started hatc hing out lightly i mean LIGHTY spotted ones the first time i noticed it on a 6 month old hen i hatched. then some people told me that i had a recesive paint gene and that i needed to breed to black so i got a black rooster today (not the pertiest but will have to do) so this spring i will start my paint project yay so excited!!! never had a chicken breeding project before!!!! any thing i need to know?????

Is there a minimum or maximum number of "spots" that determines this color? I know this is a project color and a work in progress, but I was wondering if too few spots or too many spots becomes something else? The only thing I can think of right now is like a splash though I know that is not right. Here is my little girl that I call a paint, please tell me if she is or isn't and if she isn't what color would she be, please?

She is almost two months old. The black is down to the skin, she has dark skin, great feet with black skin (no pink or yellow). Her white is very bright and that is dirt in her crest, sorry!

she looks paint to me. is she blue on her wing or is that black? I have some that are blue paints (so blue instead of black) on white.
