Hello! We had two chicks hatch March 19th (our second surprises!—we aren’t intending on breeding chickens), and I’m wondering if we can figure out who are their parents. Thank you!
Both chicks are dark skinned. Both chicks were sired by a Silkie or silkie showgirl as those are the only two cockerels we had with the girls. One hatched from a silkie egg & the other from a blue green egg. I only have three silkie/showgirl girls and two blue layers, so that narrows things down a bit.
The chicks at hatch & now (5 weeks old):
The 2 possible moms of the blue egg chick:
Dani (splash EE) & Pollyanna (black split from lavender Ameraucana) both have muffs & beards, but only Dani has a crest like the chick… but could the Silkie dad give a crest (or more of a poof??) if Pollyanna was the mom?
Do both moms here have light enough legs/skin that we can sex link this chick with dark skin as a female for sure? Is this chick considered blue? Coming from a blue egg & having a Silkie (cream egg gene) dad, Clover should lay olive eggs, correct?
Possible dads of both chicks:
Black Silkie or Frazzle feathered showgirl cockerel of unknown color (red pile?)
3 Silkie chick possible moms:
The Silkie chick is frizzled feathered, so then the only dad option is the frazzle cockerel (who is now gone). None of my Silkie moms are frizzled (or frazzled). And I guess the black showgirl would be his mom, right? Since he is all black? Wouldn’t the frazzled light colored cockerel and a partridge or red pile/cream pullet make non-black chicks?
(The single naked neck gene is not dominant. I figured that out when we only had the bow tie showgirl cockerel in with the girls and got only one naked neck chick of five surprises last year.)
Since the blue egg chick has smooth feathered, she must be a daughter of the black Silkie (the other cockerel was frazzled and had two genes of frizzled feathers and only could have frizzled offspring since that’s dominant). So if she has a black Silkie dad based on her smooth feathers, and her feathers look a little lighter color than black (blue?) and she has a crest like Dani (who as a splash would carry blue genes), can we for sure say her mom is Dani? Or could a black Silkie dad & a black split from lavender mom have a blue-ish chick with a crest?
Here’s my assessment of their genes & who the parents must be:
Clover from the blue egg came from Silkie dad due to having smooth (not frizzled) feathers & from BBS Easter Egger mom Dani due to her crest.
Patty/Patrick must be from the frazzled cockerel since he is frizzled & the black showgirl hen. (All of my showgirls only have one copy of the naked neck gene since they all have the bowtie on their necks (so 25% chance of getting a non-naked neck chick from two bow tie parents).
Please correct me if I’m wrong! I’m new at this! (& not letting them breed on purpose! We were sick the first time & gone during an ice storm the next time—so the neighbor didn’t gather eggs daily) Thank you!

The first photo doesn’t show the blue egg color as well as this one. Circled are more recent eggs from Dani & Pollyanna, one of which Clover hatched from.
