I have a male with a slate like chest color too that came from a male with dun, would that be where the slate came from?

Genetics alone will not produce eggs that dark. Diet and Enviroment will also play a role. Feed rich in Iron and Lot's of shade(no free range) will give you the darkest egg with the correct Genetic background.

Do you have a link that talks about this? I have a hard time believing yhat free ranging a bird alone causes them to produce a different egg color
