The Backwards chicken↪

I have a chicken that's about three and a half years old that as long as I can remember when she gets out of the coop she lowers her head Wiggles it left and right and walks backwards. She does this a couple of times before she walks forward and continues on with her day does anybody else have a chicken that does this or does anybody know why my chicken does this?

Chickens have three forward gears and a reverse gear. They usually use the reverse gear when scratching for bugs when they use it to see what bugs or seeds their feet may have scratched up.

However, your hen could have a mild case of wry neck which include strange motions of the head and walking backwards. You could give her vitamin E 400iu with a sliver of selenium for several days and see if that eliminates her symptoms.

It is an interesting behavior, my 2 Black sex links been doing that too since they’re really young. But they do it when I come in the run or giving them water or feeds. I always thought they were odd because they’re sex links and just excited for food.
