The Backyarding Begins

I forget what I actually googled, I think it was first something along the lines of what breeds work best in a smaller yard or maybe what breeds require the least amount of space. I also was comparing pre-made coops, and that led me here as well.

I did find the app! That is really handy. I will certainly look into uploading pics and using the app since I am sure I will inevitably have many a question on things that require a pic share.

Welcome to BYC! Bantam breeds require less space because they are smaller. But they usually aren't as productive as standard size hens.
If I were you, I would not go with a pre fab coop. They are typically flimsy and weak and much too small for the amount of birds it says it can hold. It's best to build if you can :)

I definitely agree that pre-mades are not ideal. Unfortunately it looks like it will be quite some time before I have my tools here at the house (and even then I don't have all tools required, more of a car mechanic/tinker), and I figured I could get a decent one now, with just a bird or two, and then try to expand from there. Ideally, I want to find a way to let them out quite a bit in a more fenced-off area of the backyard. My roommates may decide to bring their dog here to stay in the backyard, which opens up the possibility of seeing how well the dog could be as a guard dog (Definitely want input on this!). It may also be possible to just extend the run to a larger area but still have the coop be appropriately Fort Knox'd. My backyard is kind of odd, it's divided up into sections, kinda. I am pretty sure I can make it work, but I know that I will definitely be upgrading the run space, somehow. Just not sure on the specifics yet. :p
