The BANTAM ORPINGTON Thread

If they won't eat the ff, try mixing a little yogurt in his water. I also use that method when I don't have much yogurt on hand and someone in one pen or another seems to need some.

I used to know this lady who tried to live on sugar because it gave her energy. She was as thin as a rail and was constantly in and out of her doctor's office. She had "irritable bowel syndrome" which, you guessed it, presents as diarrhea. Yogurt can help.

Does the whole grain mix have wheat in it? A lack of B vitamins can cause it as well.

I had a thought about the yogurt. You said your big girls will eat it, will Snickers eat it? I was thinking perhaps you could give him a dish of it, on the opposite side of HIS fence from your big girls with a dish of it. They will eat heartily and he will watch. They will likely flick yogurt everywhere. He may try some that has gone flying through the air or has landed on him or Snickers.

You also might try giving him some shredded cheese. The fats will slow down the digestion.

Do you supply vitamins/electrolytes in his water? He would need these to supply what he loses through the super fast and watery "discharge". There's also acidophilus that you can buy especially for birds or you can get supplements that come in capsules. Empty this into his food. I was also informed that you can sneak many things into a chicken by "buttering" toast with it. Maybe butter some toast and sprinkle on some acidophilus powder or just spread yogurt onto some toast. It doesn't have to be thick.

If all else fails, you can actually force feed him. You probably would only have to do it once. Get a teaspoon of yogurt and hold him on your lap with his feet locked between your legs. Grip his comb and with some yogurt on your finger (just a little) use that fingernail at the edge of his beak to get him to open his mouth. When he does, simply swipe your finger against the corner of his mouth, depositing the yogurt inside. Or you can swipe it against the bottom of his lower beak so that he receives it next to his tongue and can then taste it but I would do several at the corner of his mouth first.

I sure hope you can get him to try it.

It may be that his intestines are permenantly damaged by the parasite infestations that he had. Sometimes the damage to the intestinal wall is so great that they never fully recover and are never able to fully absorb the nutrients they need. It may be a problem without a solution unfortunately.

That is the feeling that I am getting. He is seems to feel good and is acting normal (did I mention he is a sweetie pie?

)so I am not concerned that he at death's door or anything, it is just that he has overcome so much in his short little life that I want him to be as healthy as possible. I was just noticing that his feathers look a little better today and they have more of a sheen to them. Maybe he can absorb the amino acids in the raw beef better than the amino acids in the fish meal that is in his feed?

Just took this pic:

Here is the ingredient for Scratch and Peck starter: Organic Peas, Organic Wheat, Organic Barley, Organic Linseed Meal, Fish Meal, Organic Camelina Meal, Vitamin and Mineral Pre-mix:, Organic Vegetable (Flax) Oil, Limestone (Calcium Carbonate).

I do give our chickens a little coconut oil everyday so wouldn't that slow down his digestion as well? I have not given him cheese as of yet because I know in humans that can cause intestinal distress but it probably wouldn't hurt to give him a little try it. I do have some raw cheddar that I can give him so I will try that this afternoon.

Yes, I do give him probiotics and electrolyes in his water, but I do notice that when I let him out to free range he always seeks out the big girl's water which is just water and ACV. I don't give him probiotics and or electrolytes every day just a few times as week. The rest of the time he gets his water and ACV mix.

Thanks for the suggestions on the yogurt and acidophilus capusles. He does love bread so I wonder if I smeared a tsp of yogurt on some bread if he would eat it?

Oh,and I gave the fermented feed and yogurt another try this morning. Still sitting there hasn't been touched. He has an iron will I have to give him that. LOL!!

Thanks again for the suggestions Lacy Blues! You are a sweetie.

Well, the cheese was a no go. LOL!! I tried to hand feed him some and he took it in his beak and put it down on the ground. He basically just transferred the little pile of cheese from my hand to the ground. We walked back over to his pile of cheese a few minutes later to see if I could get him to try it again and he just stood over it. Then out of nowhere the big girls showed up and ate it in a flash!

As I was looking at him stand there watch the big girls eat his cheese, I was reminded of something my husband said about him the other day. My husband calls him "Steven Tyler" because #1) he is skinny, #2) he has salt and pepper hair, #3) with those curly feathers hanging down under his belly he looks like he is wearing a bunch of scarves. LOL!

@Peanutsmomma eventually, gotta give them time to mature, hatch a few from the flock for myself, and then most likely.

Probably later this fall.
