The BANTAM ORPINGTON Thread

I mix game bird grower and flock raiser 50/50 and ferment it. The birds LOVE it! Also, for the evening feed I have a separate mixture. Same base, but I add in a little bit of Black Oil Sunflower Seed and some rolled barley. In the evening is also when the get additions to the food. Sometimes I'll hard boil a bunch of excess eggs and chop them up, mixing into the fermented feed. They also get various sprouts... BOSS, milo, oats, barley and wheat.

I give fermented feed in the am and they have crumbles in front of them 24/7. They get scratch (whole corn, BOSS and wheat) twice a day with extra corn in the evening during the winter. Chickens eat everything and if they are picky you are probably over feeding.

He isn't really that big I think my camera on my phone made him look bigger. He is only a little bit bigger then my bantam cochin rooster. I will try to get a better pic of him today. Also he is 6 months sorry forgot to put that.

bantam orpingtons are cute! Love their fluffy round shape, and the fact that they are smaller makes it even cuter! are they more broody than the lf orpingtons? also does broodiness affect them in terms of being a pet? I know their egg laying stops, but does their personality change/problematic if you are just keeping them as pets?

Hello asteria01: My purchase of 16 Bantam Buff Orpingtons in Aug of 2013, there were only 4 pullets. All the cockerels were the most friendly w/o being encouraged. All I had to do was pull up a chair, and I'd have a lap full of young Orpingtons. Mine haven't been broody since they were 6mo's old. Their eggs are big in relation to my other bantam breeds. They are not mean, but they are not intimidated by the other chickens either. If I took time to handle them, they'd be make very fine pets.

I only have one bantam English Orpington, and she's definitely a pet. She lives with all LF (large fowl) & doesn't seem to know she's different. The LF let her get away with all kinds of things that they'd peck a bigger hen for trying. Mine is not a cuddler, but does jump up on our shoulders, backs, or laps. She has a superiority complex, but it's just part of her quirky personality.

When she's laying, we get an egg a day. It's small, but when compared to her body size, it's remarkable! She's 11 months old & has gone broody 2xs. We've never had her hatch eggs, so I don't if she'd be a good mom. The last time she was broody for 3.5 weeks then started laying exactly 2 weeks after abandoning the nest. She made 27 eggs in the past 30 days, so even though she goes broody, I feel her annual total will make her a "good" layer.

A question for those more experienced than I:

Are eggs A & C fertile? They are from the same bantam orp - Cookie. Egg B is my control - from an Easter Egger & is fertile.
