The BANTAM ORPINGTON Thread

Pics
In the first photo he does not look bvery good. But in the others, you may have something to work with. Start showing him and allow a judge to see it first hand and see what it does at the shows. I would house him apart from all male birds. If neccessary, give him a bantam hen for company.

Get the DVD I mentioned above and check out the links. Nicole (7) carries King everywhere. His aggressivness must have been because of the more agressive game bantams. Glad he settled down!

You will get many different opinions on this thread. But folks here are friendly and really do want to help.

Osuman is partly right. Most hatcheries are concerned with quanity over quality. Ideal has a reputation for quality, but they still can not cull as hard as we can as breeders. Many of us on this thread can supply hatching eggs.

OK, I have seen some pretty amazing pictures of every ones Bantam Orpingtons, and they are beautiful. I am going to share pictures of our only Orpington. We got him at a feed store last spring, and they get their chicks from Ideal. So, he is not from a nice breeder but from a hatchery. He is definitely not as nice looking as some of the ones that I have seen on here, but we LOVE him. It is because of this rooster that we decided we want to start breeding this breed. At first, we wanted to get rid of him because he was so mean. I had to wear gloves if I were to go anywhere near him. But we had him in with some OEGB Bantams, and once we separated him from the those he mellowed out. He is super friendly, and comes running every time he see us, we love how he coos and caws. This breed is perfect for my 4-H boys. Here he is, Opie, with my adorable son.

I just bought a new Hova-Bator 1588, and I am dying to use it. I know that there is no guarantee on shipped eggs hatching, but do some make it? I can always get more from the feed store but we really want to hatch some out.

Hi! Welcome to the bantam orp thread and thank you for sharing pics. That looks like a very content pair.

Yes, shipped eggs can and do make it. Things to consider when buying eggs is the overall health & environment of the parent stock, weather in that location, and how a seller packs. But yes shipped eggs can hatch. You know, once you start with bantam orps you just can't stop!!!

Thank you HenThymes. Oh my gosh, you don't know how much of a kick we get out of this rooster. The boys just love him, and I am glad we finally made a decision about what bantams to breed. I will keep you all updated on our breeding adventures.

Sorry, my response is in the quote box. The quote, copy, and paste didn't work so well for me. Oops!

HallFamilyFarm ~ Opie is away from the OEGB Bantams, and is living in a duck coop with two Easter Egger pullets. They have a sectioned off area where the ducks can't get to them or make a mess in their living quarters. He actually loves the ducks and hangs out with them more than with the EE's. We only have the EE's in with him to keep him company for now.

He will be great for my novice, 7yr old (not the one in the picture) to show for showmanship.

Thanks for the advice and help.

I would recommend that instead of getting eggs, getting a started trio so you have a better chance of getting a good start then if you start with eggs. I would also recommend that you join the United Orpington Club, there are a lot of people on there that can help you out with information and birds.

How old are your girls? Is this a typical age to start laying?

My buff girls are over a year old, this year was an unusually hard molt for most my orpingtons both LF and bantams, some I haven't had an egg from in over 6 months. Did however find a LF egg today too!!!

Bantams vary as to when/what age they start to lay from bird to bird, I have had them start between 5-6 months old and have had others hold out till they were 9 months old.
