The BANTAM ORPINGTON Thread

Pics
Hi i have two chocolate orpington bantams, both beautiful little girls :D
Came to own them by total accident when a local farm went bust i went to buy up some of their stock of hens and bought two RIR chicks, leaving these two beauties the only two chicks left, i didnt have the heart to leave them on their own so fluttered my eye lashes at my husband and won! :D

Here are my girls :D

Yes they are! But hopefully that will not last long. I have a nice quad I won on rarebreeds. They are too cute though. I may look for a nice UK black bantam female or two next year to add to this bunch. I am curious to see how big they get compared to my other breeds. Those with the UK breeds do you keep breeding to UK or do you try to add US blood and breed towards the US standard. I am not sure I'll ever show these (or if I'll keep them for long) but I do like how they look - just not sure how well this will work with NH winters. Should I house them seperately than the larger Standard Orpingtons or other standard breeds?

This is one of my females

This is my male - he has been trying to crow for a few weeks now.

This is another female

All four enjoying a hand held snack

This is a picture from late June of all four. The others are Cream Legbars.

Size will depend on where the chocs came from, I have seen a couple different sizes in them, some way big for bantams. I am not sure you will find any UK bantam blacks in the US, not sure if anyone has imported pure black yet?? For me I will be taking my chocs to one of the very best American black bantams available and breeding more toward the SOP for showing down the road.

Yes I've heard that is the case, I was very lucky though as i got them from a farm that was going into liquidation i paid £3 each for them. not sure what that is in USD approx $5 i think? A stroke of luck i think as i know they can go from anything from £40 right up to £250 depending on the bird!

I think the usual rule of thumb is sometime between 18-23 weeks depending on the breed. these are my first bantams so im in trial and error stage with mine too!
