I was on another thread and others are saying that they can see pretty well what an egg is doing at six days. I can't. I have to wait at least until ten days.

I am using a little mag flashlight with an end that fits down squishy like over the large end of the egg.

Is there a better way to candle?

I am not handy making things.

If there is a candler I can get that would work better for me (that wouldn't cost too much) I would like to know. My eggs are mostly RIR eggs, so not too dark, but not white, either. And some Buff Orpingtons.

Any suggestions appreciated.

There are different ways to candle.I will tell you how I do it.If you are right handed, make a loose fist with your left hand but leave a hole down through the center, use a Mini Maglite LED flashlight and stick it up into the hole you made with your fist from the bottom.Lay the egg sideways on top of the hole you have made and adjust your fingers so no light is escaping.
You will need to do this in a dark room but don't worry after a few times you will be able to do it with your eyes closed.(Hee,Hee,just kidding)

If your flashlight is not a LED you may want to pick one up,they are very bright and do a great job for me.
Last night I candled some small brown eggs that incubated for 4 days and did not have any trouble seeing the little dark
embryo and veining.
I hope this helps you and good luck...

For more information on candling and what to look for go to the stickys under incubating and hatching eggs.

This is my first time incubating eggs and I have been using a toilet paper roll and a large flash light to candle my eggs. I could see the veins at day 3.

Thank you guys. I have incubated a lot, so this is not my first time candling, but I surely do think I could do better seeing what is there.

I will try the 'fist' method tonight with the little flashlight I have and see if I can see more.

And then, should the snow ever stop ever, and I can get out to shop around, I will look for a brighter flashlight.

Thanks again.
