CHAPTER 24- First Full Day Together
The next morning the humanlady opened the little door, and the biggest little rooster let the Ladies go out first. Then he joined them for breakfast.
They all ended up in the corner of the run, and the littlest little rooster and several of the girls were on the other side of the fence.
The biggest little rooster felt as if he should be on the other side of the fence, but he didnt mind in the least. He liked his little flock, but his wish for the past few months was to have the Ladies all to himself. He would have resigned from the flock leader position if he were able. But this way was better. He couldnt do anything about it. He was glad he could blame the humanlady for locking him in.
The only thing that was really bothering the biggest little rooster was the fact that he was locked up. Yes, if he had to be locked up, he preferred to be with the Ladies. He walked around the run several times looking for a way out. He figured he would be a real hero if he could find a way to get himself and his ladies out.
He took extra care in the corners, looking for a way out, but he found none. Those humans sure did a good job securing this run. He looked up. The fence was pretty high. He wasnt sure he could jump that far. Then he noticed the roof. Secretly, he didnt think he could jump over the fence, so the roof overhead made yet another good excuse. He was tickled pink that with all these excuses, no one would know his weaknesses.
Meanwhile, the little WeeMan Woo realized the biggest little rooster couldnt get to him. He awkwardly tried to snuggle with a few of the girls. Unfortunately, he did not yet have the gentle charm that the biggest little rooster had. The girls were not impressed with the littlest roosters advances. He was a bit forceful, and the girls didnt like that at all.
The littlest little rooster was afraid to take over as flock leader. He wanted so badly to be the big guy, but knew it wouldnt be right. While the biggest little rooster was away, though, the little WeeMan Woo could certainly pretend he was at the top. He stood on a log, fluffed up to look big, and let out a coarse sounding, squeaky crow.
The biggest little rooster, meanwhile, wasnt concerned about his little flock. He knew that he had nothing to worry about. Even if he were separated from them forever, he would always be flock leader. The little WeeMan Woo just wasnt leader material. Even the bossiest little girl wouldnt challenge the biggest little rooster. So, for now, he had the best of both worlds.
If only he could be let out, it would be so much better. He heard the humanlady say she was going to keep him locked up for two days, and then see what happens. He didnt know how long two days was, but he hoped it wasnt long at all.
He enjoyed the day with the Ladies. There were times when the little girls talked to him through the fence, but those chats were short. He did keep an eye on them. If the little WeeMan Woo got too rough, he would yell at him through the fence. Hed ask the girls if they had enough treats, or were warm enough. Not that he could do anything about it, but it was nice to ask.
The day was a good one. Once he realized there was no escaping, he calmed down and watched the show (Human TV). The humanlady was making the fence 2 feet higher, and it was quite a show watching the girls jump up and not make it over. Again, he was glad he was locked up; otherwise hed be one of the foolish ones trying to hop the fence.
Then the humanlady was following one of the escapees. This particular girl was escaping every day, and the humanlady knew there had to be a pile of eggs somewhere. The biggest little rooster watched as the little girl ran the humanlady around in circles before losing her behind a bush. The humanlady was crawling around the neighbors yard looking inside and under everything, but could not find the little girl and her egg stash.
Human TV was ended- the humanlady gave up and went inside. The biggest little rooster went about his duties. He looked around for good things for the Ladies to eat. He helped dig little dust bath dents. He snuggled the Ladies.
He was surprised when he realized the sun was going down. He thought being locked up would make the day go by slow, but it hadnt. In fact, it had gone by quite fast. And now it was dark inside the coop. He peeked in.
The Ladies were not afraid of the dark, so they were not ready to go in to bed. The biggest little rooster wanted to get in before it got any darker. But it was his job to get everyone to bed. This was a serious dilemma. When he was with the little ones, hed let them go in first. They never knew he wanted them to go first to scare off the boogeyman.
All this thinking and trying to decide what would make him look manly was taking time. It was getting darker. He took a deep breath and walked slowly into the coop. He made it up on the first roost. No boogeyman! Now he was looking at the higher roost. The humanlady was helping him. She had the flashlight.
That upper roost sure seemed high. He squatted down in jump position. He chickened out. He squatted down in jump position again. And chickened out again. Finally, he was ready. He squatted in jump position. He counted down; 3 . 2 .1 GO!
And he stepped up onto the upper roost.
Then he settled down, and waited for the Ladies.
