The Biggest Little Rooster -- grandchickies on the way!!

CHAPTER 24- First Full Day Together

The next morning the humanlady opened the little door, and the biggest little rooster let the Ladies go out first. Then he joined them for breakfast.

They all ended up in the corner of the run, and the littlest little rooster and several of the girls were on the other side of the fence.

The biggest little rooster felt as if he should be on the other side of the fence, but he didn’t mind in the least. He liked his little flock, but his wish for the past few months was to have the Ladies all to himself. He would have resigned from the flock leader position if he were able. But this way was better. He couldn’t do anything about it. He was glad he could blame the humanlady for locking him in.
The only thing that was really bothering the biggest little rooster was the fact that he was locked up. Yes, if he had to be locked up, he preferred to be with the Ladies. He walked around the run several times looking for a way out. He figured he would be a real hero if he could find a way to get himself and his ladies out.
He took extra care in the corners, looking for a way out, but he found none. Those humans sure did a good job securing this run. He looked up. The fence was pretty high. He wasn’t sure he could jump that far. Then he noticed the roof. Secretly, he didn’t think he could jump over the fence, so the roof overhead made yet another good excuse. He was tickled pink that with all these excuses, no one would know his weaknesses.
Meanwhile, the little WeeMan Woo realized the biggest little rooster couldn’t get to him. He awkwardly tried to snuggle with a few of the girls. Unfortunately, he did not yet have the gentle charm that the biggest little rooster had. The girls were not impressed with the littlest rooster’s advances. He was a bit forceful, and the girls didn’t like that at all.
The littlest little rooster was afraid to take over as flock leader. He wanted so badly to be the “big guy”, but knew it wouldn’t be right. While the biggest little rooster was away, though, the little WeeMan Woo could certainly pretend he was at the top. He stood on a log, fluffed up to look big, and let out a coarse sounding, squeaky crow.

The biggest little rooster, meanwhile, wasn’t concerned about his little flock. He knew that he had nothing to worry about. Even if he were separated from them forever, he would always be flock leader. The little WeeMan Woo just wasn’t leader material. Even the bossiest little girl wouldn’t challenge the biggest little rooster. So, for now, he had the best of both worlds.
If only he could be let out, it would be so much better. He heard the humanlady say she was going to keep him locked up for two days, and then see what happens. He didn’t know how long two days was, but he hoped it wasn’t long at all.
He enjoyed the day with the Ladies. There were times when the little girls talked to him through the fence, but those chats were short. He did keep an eye on them. If the little WeeMan Woo got too rough, he would yell at him through the fence. He’d ask the girls if they had enough treats, or were warm enough. Not that he could do anything about it, but it was nice to ask.
The day was a good one. Once he realized there was no escaping, he calmed down and watched the show (Human TV). The humanlady was making the fence 2 feet higher, and it was quite a show watching the girls jump up and not make it over. Again, he was glad he was locked up; otherwise he’d be one of the foolish ones trying to hop the fence.
Then the humanlady was following one of the escapees. This particular girl was escaping every day, and the humanlady knew there had to be a pile of eggs somewhere. The biggest little rooster watched as the little girl ran the humanlady around in circles before losing her behind a bush. The humanlady was crawling around the neighbors yard looking inside and under everything, but could not find the little girl and her egg stash.
Human TV was ended- the humanlady gave up and went inside. The biggest little rooster went about his duties. He looked around for good things for the Ladies to eat. He helped dig little dust bath dents. He snuggled the Ladies.
He was surprised when he realized the sun was going down. He thought being locked up would make the day go by slow, but it hadn’t. In fact, it had gone by quite fast. And now it was dark inside the coop. He peeked in.

The Ladies were not afraid of the dark, so they were not ready to go in to bed. The biggest little rooster wanted to get in before it got any darker. But it was his job to get everyone to bed. This was a serious dilemma. When he was with the little ones, he’d “let” them go in first. They never knew he wanted them to go first to scare off the boogeyman.
All this thinking and trying to decide what would make him look manly was taking time. It was getting darker. He took a deep breath and walked slowly into the coop. He made it up on the first roost. No boogeyman! Now he was looking at the higher roost. The humanlady was helping him. She had the flashlight.
That upper roost sure seemed high. He squatted down in jump position. He chickened out. He squatted down in jump position again. And chickened out again. Finally, he was ready. He squatted in jump position. He counted down; 3…. 2….1… GO!

And he stepped up onto the upper roost.

Then he settled down, and waited for the Ladies.

I absolutely love how your pics are so perfect with your wonderful stories...I know I said that last night, but how perfect it really is, astounds me!

If only I could capture on film how my silly duck bobs her head and walks toward me, talking duck talk, she's very serious and happy, and I don't know what she's doing or telling me, except it sure is cute! And, you do capture it all...and then share:)

CHAPTER 25- People TV

The next day was very interesting. Humanlady brought out a nice warm scrambled egg, fried rice and veggie treat for everyone. The biggest little rooster called the Ladies over to the feast. He ate with them this time, because the food was warm and very yummy. He did make sure the Ladies had enough first, though.
After breakfast, there was a show! The biggest little rooster settled down with the Ladies to watch.
The humanlady had let the little ones out, and was watching one of them. The watched chicken was trying to hop the fence, but was unable to do so now that the fence was higher. The humanlady was quite pleased with herself.
The little chicken, who couldn’t make it over the fence, was very determined to get out. She ran and flapped her wings, and landed on the Ladies porch roof. From there, she took off into the neighbors yard. The humanlady literally ran after her. They ran around a bush, and then the humanlady said “ AHA I FOUND YOU”.
Then the humanlady seemed satisfied, and went into the little flocks run and sat down. The darkest red little chicken pecked the humanlady’s elbows and knees. The humanlady giggled. After a while, she went back to where the little chicken was hiding, which was in the very back corner of a little falling down shed in the neighbor’s yard. She knew that little chicken had been laying eggs somewhere, but hadn’t been able to find the hiding spot.
As the little chicken came out of the shed and her hiding spot was revealed, the biggest little rooster heard the humanlady laughing hysterically. He wondered what she found.

The humanlady then chased the little chicken around. The biggest little rooster was having quite the laugh. The humanlady made black marks on the little chicken. He wondered why she would do that to a little pretty girl. Humans sure were odd.
The People TV show was "To Be Continued".
The next morning,on the second half of People TV, it was explained why the humanlady marked the chicken. When she let the little ones out, she grabbed up the marked one, and made her stay in the coop. The biggest little rooster heard the girl making a huge fuss. He wanted to help her out, but he knew there was nothing he could do. The humanlady saw him looking and listening to the racket the little girl was making. She explained to him that the little girl needed to learn to lay her eggs in the coop.
After the chicken marking, there was more People TV. The humanlady was putting siding on the little coop. She seemed to be so unorganized. She had to keep going in and out of the gate. There were sounds of drilling and humanlady saying naughty words. The biggest little rooster even saw some blood. Humanlady had to keep dodging pecks from the dark red chicken, and shoo the 7 little “helpers”. The biggest little rooster was finding People TV to be a comedy.
The little girl who always gets pecked on follows the humanlady like a little puppy. Humanlady had to try hard not to step on her. The biggest little rooster thought the humanlady had some pretty fancy footstepping going on. His dance for the Ladies was much better!
On the next episode, the humanlady was trying to throw away a slimy green thing, but the obnoxiously hairy creature kept running after it, and bringing it back to her. Personally, the biggest little rooster thought the extremely hairy little creature was a bumble-headed weirdo. He couldn’t understand why the humans liked that thing.
He tired of watching that pretty quickly. It was like a record skipping- throw the slimy green thing, creature runs, picks it up, brings it back; lather, rinse, repeat. So he started digging a ditch. Not for escaping- he was making a dust bath dent. The Ladies stood around and watched. They thought the biggest little rooster had such huge strong feet. They could hardly wait until he was done digging, but they loved to watch him work.
When he was done, they all jumped in. The biggest little rooster helped fling dirt on the Ladies. He realized he was in a bath, surrounded by beautiful Ladies. Could life get ANY better?

CHAPTER 26- WeeMan Woo Steps Up

That night, as it got dark, WeeMan Woo took charge. He made sure the girls got inside the coop safely. He even waited outside in the almost dark waiting for the 3 fence jumpers to make it back safely. The biggest little rooster was already inside the Ladies coop. He had told the Ladies that he needed to go to bed earlier because he had worked so hard protecting them. They were not aware of his fear of the dark.
Humanlady did a headcount, and everyone was in safe and sound. WeeMan had his girls all safe and sound. Humanlady poked in and saw the moon (times 6)

The next morning was another very beautiful day outside. The sun was shining and it was quite warm. Everyone was let out into the sunshine, except the marked girl, who was being locked up again today until she laid her egg in the proper place. The humanlady came out with a bowl, and everyone knew what that meant- TREATS!! They all ran to the fence to see what goodies they were going to get today.
Lineup.jpg

The biggest little rooster was watching another funny episode of People TV. The humanlady was pulling nails out of old lumber. Just like yesterday, she had a chicken audience, and some chicken helpers. There were some naughty words, and a lot of grunting and just the littlest bit of blood. The biggest little rooster was surprised; the girls were not even the slightest bit scared of the loud thing the humanlady was holding. It made the lumber break into little pieces. The biggest little rooster thought he’d probably be a little scared of it.
The little girl who is at the bottom of the pecking order started challenging the humanlady. She bit her 3 times, and had her feathers all puffed out. The biggest little rooster didn’t know whether that was very brave, or very stupid. The humanlady promptly picked that girl up and carried her around .It must have been very stupid.
WeeMan had watched the biggest little rooster yesterday, and was trying to be gentle with the girls today. He wanted them to like him. He tried to be very gentle in his snuggling, but a few times he forgot. For the most part though, he didn’t make the girls squawk.
He wanted to do something nice for the girls. So he dug a little dent in the ground, and called the girls over. Like the biggest little rooster had done yesterday, little WeeMan took a dust bath with the girls.
DustBath3.jpg

He helped fling dirt all over the girls, who were cooing happily, and thanking him.
DirtyDustBath.jpg

Now he understood why the biggest little rooster looked so happy. It felt good to be surrounded by happy girls.

Later, the humanlady let the biggest little rooster and the Ladies out of the run. They were so excited to be out free. The humanlady warned the biggest little rooster to behave and not take the Ladies on an adventure. Little roosters aren’t much different from humans. All he heard was “ blah blah blah blah ADVENTURE”!
When the biggest little rooster got a little far away, he crowed. Then he remembered his little brother wasn’t around anymore to crow back. He was just feeling a little sad when he heard a crackly, squeaky crow. He crowed again, and heard the response. Just to make sure, he crowed several more times, and each time there was a response. Little WeeMan was filling his big brothers shoes nicely. The biggest little rooster was proud of him.
