THE Brinsea Octagon 20 Eco Thread; Hatches, etc. (PICS)

Interesting note with at least the Octagon 20 Eco, there is approximately 0.5 degrees Fahrenheit differences between the far clockwise rotation vs. the far counter-clockwise rotation of the whole incubator when in or not in the auto turn cradle. I have a custom wireless battery powered sensor in the incubator that logs the temp and humidity values in real time. The temp-humidity sensor is deployed about 1in below the stock Octagon 20 Eco thermometer. For a couple of days I hand turned the whole incubator by hand then I put it into the auto turn cradle to see if the results would be the same. So, far they are. I just thought that I would post it. I mean 0.5 degree difference is not huge; however, it is notable. It maybe caused by "warmer" air rising and/or the whether the sensor is "upwind" or "downwind" of the water wells. I do have them filled. I might be getting a slight "swamp" cooler effect. Or it could be something completely different

. Anyways, it is interesting.

has anybody bought an eco 20 recently and not been able to move the air vent? I just my eco 20 in the mail yesterday and the air vent WOULD NOT budge, no matter how hard a tried.

I just called Brines and they said they had a bad batch that was doing this. I am waiting to hear back from a sales supervisor, because i already set some eggs in it, so i am not sending it back until they send me a new one. the issue has not yet been resolved, but so far their customer service has been very friendly and responsive. I will keep you posted.

I just got mine on Christmas and did not have this issue. But there is actually a study done that says keeping the vent closed for the first 12 days will create stronger chicks. So hopefully this defect works in your favor. Also on the base there are small air holes. I would just lift the lid once a day to get fresh air flow in there. I hope they resolve this issue promptly.

I talked to Brinsea, they are sending me a new unit and a UPS shipping label to send the old unit back. Not sure how long it will take them to send the new one here, but up to this point their customer service has been top-notch. they responded quickly and are sending a new unit, with very few questions asked.

Hi - I use the turner, but if you don't have one, you just roll the whole incubator unit forwards and then backwards several times a day That's why it is built in the shape it is, with the faces on the end plates to hold it in different positions.

I'm not happy with my humidity at lockdown. I'm using a paper towel as a wick in the bottom but my humidity is struggling to reach 60%. I like a higher humidity, usually I go for at least 70%. So my question is...has anyone ordered the clips and evaporation pad that brinsea makes for the pump and used it with aquarium tubing to keep it wet in the Eco?? It would be the same process as the pump but I'd have to add the water manually with a syringe through the tubing.

Hey Ruby :frow
In the manual for my Advance, there is a picture that shows the pads folded into an L shape, then placed on the edges of the channels to wick water like you are with the paper towel. I think you are talking about actually clipping them like you would with the pump, then adding water manually. The only problem there is there is a dedicated port on the Advance to run the tubing through. I don't think the Eco has that port, but you may could get to the clipped pad through the vent. I'm just not sure about the angle it would take to reach it.
That is my only complaint with the Octagon, maintaining lockdown humidity without the pump
