The Broody Duck Thread for 2014

Still only two little fluff butts. TreeTrunks pushed one egg out of the nest. I checked on the remaining six and they were a little on the cold side. I candled them and I see an air sack, but no movement or cheeping like the other two. She is still sitting on them, but taking longer breaks. It is still really warm weather though.

The two little ones are curious little things. Lots of energy from them! I didnt see them eating much. I had water fowl starter, which was in the form of a small pellet. I remembered when my ducks were little they did nothing but eat and eat and eat. So i went and picked up from chick starter in the form of crumbles. I'm hoping this will be easier to eat. If that was the problem.

When I opened up the pen today Mama TreeTrunks took her babies right to the pond!

My other two Mallards are keeping their distance from the fluff butts. No aggression yet.

I am glad to have found this thread as my first scovy to go broody this year hatched three adorable hinny ducklings yesterday. :D

We just took a piece of fencing and split the run in half. My DH made a little lean too and put a bowl of food and water under it, just in case she comes out to eat. She did not come out and eat today again though. Momma knows best I guess.
They can sure make us worry about them.

I have duck pellets and corn in their now that they eat. What will I put in for the babies to eat when their born and do I get rid of the adult food so they don't eat it?

They won't be able to eat the pellets they need crumble. and I wouldn't give them corn either till at least 4-6 weeks old.

Thanks!! I had serious doubts that my broody was sitting on fertile eggs, so it was a nice surprise she hatched a trio of babies. I have 3 more broody scovies plus two that could still go broody.... so I expect I'll have a few more ducklings hatched out at my place before season is over.

I checked my chocolate and white girl's nest this morning while she was off eating breakfast. There were two very wet ducklings, one egg with a significant hole in it, and one egg that had hatched, but fallen out of the nest and the duckling was cold and not moving much. I rescued said duckling and put him in the incubator with his sister who hatched yesterday. Hoping he pulls through and that the rest will hatch okay.

None of the 4 that I fostered over to crazy mama looked like they had pipped yet.
