The Broody Duck Thread for 2014

They can go broody again after their first hatch. sometimes 2-3 times a season
O no, I will have to collect daily again then. These babies are promised out to some BYC people, if there's 1 or 2 left, I will keep and if not I have my forever couple

We'll see how this time goes. My 1 khaki stayed on her eggs yesterday till about 3 in the afternoon and then got off and went for a swim and stayed out the rest of the day. Almost thought she was gonna stay seated.

And she still might, sometimes it takes them a while to get committed. Good for you having homes for your ducklings.

You know some drakes are fine with ducklings some aren't so I like to er on the side of caution and separate mom and ducklings for 2-3 weeks where drake can see them but not touch. this gives ducklings time to grow and get strong and completely sure of themselves so when they are with dad they know to get out of his way if they need to.

Looking forward to hearing about those ducklings when they get here.

Thank you! I was thinking that it would be a good idea. I will separate them for a few weeks. Now I am just hoping that some of them hatch :)

oh good!, so is she looking after her baby good??

We'll find out today. She just hatched it yesterday and I found it carefully covered up and snuggled in the nest, just dried out, at dinnertime when mama was off eating. Very much hoping she takes care of it. She seems to live to be a mama, and I recall her last year's babies being an obsession with her.

Crazy mama came out today to show off her one and only duckling, and she's being a wonderful mama. Got some breakfast, went for a swim, then walked and foraged in the sunshiny grass and daisy fields.

Here she is (rouen) with her current (muscovy) boyfriend, and her (khaki/cayuga) foster baby that she finally hatched! They're quite a strange-looking, but happy blended family out for a walk in the sunshine!
