The Broody Duck Thread for 2014

I have a runner duck going broody! She's stopped laying, is sitting on 7 eggs. Today is Day 3. And my Rouen is really, really grumpy, running around with her neck all scrunched up, feathers fluffed.

and what a beautiful duck.

I thought, if any of my ducks went broody, it would have been my magpie. Flock-wise, it doesn't really matter if she actually hatches them or not, but I thought I'd give her a chance.

Well, two of my eight Muscovy girls are sitting.. the rest are just hell bent on overwhelming me with eggs lol.... The first girl should hatch hers out around the tenth of June ! I candles her nest when she was out eating.. 12 out of 13 are good .

Been a long month. Lightening has come out a few times to eat but really stays on the nest 24/7. Hatch should be this Saturday if my calculations are right. We have a good size fenced in area within the ducks fenced in area for mama and the babies, so they can be with the others but separate. Also this fence has much smaller holes, I think under an in. so they don't get out and near the pond. What age about are muscovies ok to be let out by pond? Also need a good waterer idea that will work for mama and babies till I know they can't drown. Thanks, getting excited

How exciting so close now.. I like to use something like these
LL
I make 2 one for mama with larger hole and sit it up on something where littles can't get to it and then I make another for the littles with a smaller hole they can only get their heads into and then cut it bigger as they grow. I usually use these till 3 weeks by them they can be let out with the main flock and I use a rubber bowl for the ducklings and buckets as usual for everyone else.
