The Broody Duck Thread for 2014

Yup 3rd one hatched last night! No more eggs
CONGRATULATIONS!

The new one doesn't seem like it wants to be outside considering its not even 24 hours old?? But mommas are napping standing up lol so it just huddled under their legs. Haven't been home much today not sure if she has had it outside all day. I know she wants out of that house tho lol!!! The new one is the yellow on the right,
OMG, sooo precious!

What is your ramp made out of?

I want the boat sandbox like this for a pool lol
I LOVE this one

Well, Momma duck abandoned eggs when I moved them. I had candled them before the move and there really wasn't anything going on so I don't feel too bad. I'm a rookie candler but with her not have been sitting 24 hrs yet maybe I was right on. Someone has built a nest on the opposite end of the night pen from where I had moved hers to. It's only about 5' away. Is it possible for ducks to move eggs from one nest to another? I ask because some of the eggs I moved there are missing.

I know I shouldn't be hoping for someone to start sitting this late in the year but I reeeealllly want my own babies.

My 2 girls started with 2 nests. Then they moved the eggs to one nest. Then once the eggs started hatching they moved the nest to the back of the house.

My ramp is just wood, and I lined it with the cheap rubber shelf liner from the dollar store so they don't slip. I use it on their ramp going into their house too

I've had ducks move eggs around between nests as well, but never that far apart. I imagine it's possible since they roll them along, so it would just take a little longer to move them 5 feet than to move them the two feet I've had mine do.

This is good to hear, especially since you've had such a success.

I use the rubber shelf liner also. How does the wood do in the water?

This is good to know. I would love to see one actually moving an egg but I picked up the older eggs today so I guess I'll never know if that's what they were doing.

I'm not really sure how the wood holds up? First time with ducklings outside this early. So never needed ramp before. I just used some scrap wood we had. I'll take it out once they are big enough bc they will soon be able to hop in and out like the mommas do

Sounds like they are doing good.

Let the the dads back in with the girls today, since the ducklings are doing their own thing (for the most part) and bigger. All went very well, no problems at all. Yay!
