The Buckeye Thread

@bluface3

Hey, You really did start with the egg! I see you are a Buckeye chicken STAR. It's great that you don't take yourself too seriously though. Even better, it's terrific that you got your start just being a great Dad.

Some of us newbies are following along, soaking up every word! Just trying to figure this out. I never thought chickens would be so compelling!

Chickens are simple creatures; don't over think them. Most of the "extras" out there that claim to make a bird better is complete BS. Take your time and find quality brood stock and don't jump at the first thing you see available! Good broodstock will be the cheapest thing you buy! it costs just as much to feed a POS as it does something you can get to champion row with! So spend your time and money wisely! If you like buckeyes; make sure you take everything you read with a grain of salt; you go out and do your own research so you can find out everything for yourself and make your own conclusions! Always remember to ask "why"?

Your daughter looks happy. For some reason, I was thinking you entered your birds under the name Schumaker Farm, so doesn't that mean she will also be considered a Grand Master Breeder? (Now *that* would be an accomplishment.)

My bad; thank you Melody and Dave! That little Gem plays a huge role in the care of the birds! There is a reason she is the one that receives every honor and trophy we earn! She will eventually be an outstanding breeder when she gets a bit older!!! Just like Dave said, "sooner or later the proof is in the puddin"

I have a question... blueface

Why not? :/ what does it hurt giving your bird a bath? My girls love jumping in the shower they flap and talk and I don't do it often just usually when they get extra dirty or some one gets pooped on. They like it, I'm happy so what does it hurt? I made the mistake of leaving water bowls in the crates and it was a huge mess. Washed my birds spent 2-3 hours drying them all while talking and petting them and one ended up falling asleep like a kid. I guess for some people we do things that make us happy and may not have any rhyme or reason but as long as the welfare is primary isn't that all that matters??

Never said it would hurt anything; it's just not necessary and you run a better chance of damaging plumage! If you are bathing them with the thought of improving the bird to increase your chances of winning; the bird will never be anything more than the genes that were used to create it!! Hey it's you're choice what you do with your birds! Soap is not natural and most will just hurt the feathers by removing the oils the bird Itself applies. A blow drier is certainly not natural. At least you're not spaying them with "shine in a can". Those poor birds that get subjected to that?!?!? Believe me or not; I don't care. If you choose to treat them like pets or whatever: that's your choice. To me they are chickens that I butcher and get eggs from. The good ones end up in show pens; if they want a bath, they stand out in the rain; if they want higher protein; they catch a bug, mouse, or worm! If they want fruit; they go to the fruit trees for the fallen fruit. If they choose to fall behind; I pull their heads off! They are chickens!

A lot of father/daughter, mother/daughter teams run their birds under the farm name. The knowledge is from the parent and the child benefits by putting in hard work and learning from the parent. Nice job and keep up the good work blueface.
Melody everyone knows the breeding knowledge comes from the parent in the breeding pen. The child can have input and sometimes be correct. If I remember correctly Sydney shows under her own name in the junior division and Joe(blueface) shows under Shumaker farm. So, the award is his. Blueface can correct me if I'm wrong.

That title is just as much hers as it is mine! She is my shadow and works so hard to ensure they have great care. Sure she is learning from me and knows more than most people twice her age; but I couldn't have done what has been done without her!!!! Sydney is an amazing young lady and very dedicated!!!! Sure the breeding, selecting, money, feed, ect. is all from my end; she is only 13 years old but without her; this would have much harder!!!!
