Those are my figures too, except when I sell chicks they work out to $6 each, because I wrap the shipping in with the price. I charge $150 per 2 (actually 26, I always include an extra) chicks with everything included.


And I have learned (the hard way) I don't ever sell cull roosters. Utility hens are sold with no males...

I don't sell utility Roos either. Those go to freezer camp to feed the kids and myself.

Ok I found a show in Florida thats in December then the next will be Feb. Looking at the registration I am going to guess Large Bird American class but then theres all these clean leg blah blah blah I have no idea what to register as!

If you are showing bucks it's large fowl American

Sarah is quite right. You'd enter them as Large Fowl, American Class. There is no "Variety" because Buckeyes only come in the one color.

One of the things I am concerned about with the recent emphasis in this thread on show wins is, that newcomers to the breed will come here and feel overwhelmed or as if they are unwelcome if they do not show.

Winning at shows is not a requirement for being a good breeder of a given breed of chickens. Let's be very clear on that. Showing is helpful, if for no other reason than to prevent "barn blindness" and to give you the opportunity to see other people's birds and talk to them about the breed you're working with (networking with friends is my favorite part of shows!) But showing your birds, even winning at shows, is not a requirement for being a good breeder.

I mean, isn't that what this thread is all about folks? Inclusiveness. That's the name of the game, IMO.

I agree with you wholeheartedly and second your motion. For instance, as far as I know Jeff Lay has never won a single show, yet he has consistently produced excellent birds. I have purchased breeding birds from him and chicks out of folks who bought birds from them and have been more than satisfied with the results. You are exactly right that one does not have to be a show champion to be able to raise champion quality stock.

Why don't you post some photos of your birds? I've never seen any of Jeff's birds in person, and no recent photos. Would love to see them. How many do you have?

The forum this thread is in is titled Breeds, Genetics, & Showing is it not ??? So I don't see what the problem is for someone to post about winning a show, heck I like seeing & hearing about all the Buckeye show winners. I think that's a good thing for the Buckeye breed !!!
